Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 – Hunger & Despair Quest Guide

After completing the quest known as “Besieged,” one of the final main missions in “Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2” unfolds. This mission, titled “Hunger and Despair,” is set during the prolonged siege of Suchdol. To be more precise, it occurs on the 25th day of the siege, a time when Henry and his companions are struggling due to hunger.

To finish Hunger and Despair in KCD2, players must seek out sustenance, defend themselves against adversaries, and finally ready themselves for the ensuing Reckoning quest.

How To Find Food – Hunger & Despair – KCD2

In this adventure, it turns out that procuring sustenance for Henry and Hans is quite often a significant goal, but it’s not strictly required. If time is tight or things are tough, you can skip it. To move forward without securing food, simply navigate towards the marker leading to the kitchen where you can talk to Janosh about provisions. He will inform Henry that there’s nothing available, and you can progress by returning to Capon, declining to find food, and triggering the next phase of the quest.

This decision may have its drawbacks since it could negatively impact Hans’ view of Henry, and during the next castle attack, Henry might find himself feeling both famished and feeble. Here are some strategies for locating sustenance within Suchdol.

Choosing this option might come with drawbacks, as it may lead to a decrease in Hans’ opinion of Henry, and during the next assault on the castle, Henry could be left feeling weak and hungry. Here are some methods for finding food within Suchdol.

Before the siege, all of Henry’s stored food was confiscated and distributed as provisions. Unfortunately, there’s nothing he can do to anticipate or plan for this part of his journey.

Find Dog Meat

By conversing with the Dry Devil, or acting on their own initiative, Henry might locate and dispose of a stray dog roaming the outer courtyard. A crossbow or longbow would be most suitable for this task. Alternatively, he could prepare the meat in the kitchen or offer it to the dry devil, who can then create soup with it.

Should players discover Mutt earlier in their game and choose to keep him, he becomes the replacement for the stray dog, making this difficult decision all the more regrettable. Most players would prefer to shield Mutt from the Dry Devil’s touch, but if they believe Henry is starving enough, the Dry Devil will reluctantly carry out this act.

Leather Shoes For A Broth

An alternative dining choice is discussing food with Father Godwin, Samuel, and Musa in the inner courtyard. They might mention using leather from shoes for soup-making, and advise Henry to temporarily ‘take’ Captain Frenzl’s wife’s footwear.

As a devoted admirer, I find myself making my way toward the grand castle, aiming for what seems like Henry’s private chamber. Upon arrival, I’m greeted by Captain Frenzl’s gracious wife. The conversation that could lead to success might go something like this:

“Good day, dear lady! I was hoping to have a word with your esteemed husband regarding a matter of great importance. Might you be so kind as to ask him to spare me a moment?

  • Those shoes have no use for you anymore.

In this situation, since we’re facing an intimidation test, it would be wise to wear your full armor. If you pull it off, she will hand over some keys for a chest upstairs that Henry can access. However, if you fail, players will encounter a guard outside her room and then need to pick the lock on the chest.

Once you have the shoes, return to Musa in the kitchen to make the soup.

Horse Meat

During Hunger and Despair, one possible goal is to assist the groom in soothing the horse, named Boudica, and then ride her around the yard. This action keeps her from becoming weak and perishing. But if players find themselves in a dire situation needing food, they can instead use their crossbow to eliminate Boudica.

Preparing plenty of horse meat for Henry, which can be then prepared in the kitchen, ensures that both Henry and Hans have ample food to eat.

Fend Off The Attackers – Hunger & Despair – KCD2

After either eating something or not, everyone will attend a funeral for the departed, yet as Father Godwin concludes his service, the castle is under attack again.

During the attack, Henry will need to survive and complete a number of objectives.

Knock Down The Ladders & Get The Enemies Off The Walls

The crucial action here is to remove the ladders, since this will hinder further soldiers from storming the castle. To accomplish this task effectively, Henry should be prepared with a polearm, or search for them near where Captain Frenzl stands if none are equipped initially.

To maximize your chances of victory, charge towards the fortress walls (ramparts) swiftly and bring down at least one ladder, disregarding any adversaries you may encounter along the way.

In total, there are four ladders, but it seems that Henry might first need to confront some of the adversaries before bringing them all down. This action aligns with another objective: eliminating all combatants on the walls. Once these two objectives have been accomplished, a scene will unfold where Sir Hans gets wounded.

Eliminate Enemies In The Tower & On The Rear Wall

Following the cinematic scene, Henry must navigate back into the tumultuous situation and proceed to storm the tower, eliminating every adversary within. Engage enemies stationed on the lower parapets before scaling the stairs to ascend to the next level of the tower. Repeat this process, and the offensive will be brought to a close.

Say Goodbye To Hans Capon & Katherine – Hunger & Despair – KCD2

The upcoming phase of the Hunger and Despair quest involves numerous dialogue scenes, starting with some outside in the courtyard and concluding with a significant gathering around a table within the castle.

Once the meeting ends, players can choose to say goodbye to several characters. If you’re interested in courting Katherine, it’s recommended to chat with Jan Zizka initially to gather information about her past. Afterward, you should express your farewell to her. If Henry has kept a friendly rapport with her, there will be an opportunity for dialogue, but the event won’t transpire until later when Henry prepares for his mission with Samuel.

In a similar fashion, courting Sir Hans Capon is analogous, yet Henry finds himself in a predicament where he can’t simultaneously pursue both romances. Consequently, the players will find themselves making a choice between these heartfelt relationships. However, each romance demands a substantial amount of setup that has been developed throughout the game.
