Known filmmaker Kiran Rao, celebrated for her critically successful Laapataa Ladies, recently expressed her views on the Indian streaming platform landscape. At the 7th edition of the Indian Screenwriters Conference (ISC) held on February 14, she discussed the change in audience preferences, alluding to the “golden era” of OTT platforms while also hinting at a potential “burst” or decline in the digital world.
Kiran Rao recently commented that in today’s era, there isn’t much distinction between content on streaming platforms and what performs well at the movies. She suggests that the “supposedly successful” or popular projects on Indian OTT platforms are not dissimilar from films that used to thrive in theaters. She also mentioned that creative pursuits such as world-building may not have reached their full potential. Furthermore, she stated that there has been a bit of a decline or burst in expectations, as quoted by Hindustan Times.
The director of Laapataa Ladies observed that when the Over-the-Top (OTT) platform scene started in India approximately a decade back, creators enjoyed immense freedom and creativity. However, with the passage of time, other factors have gained prominence. She likened OTT to a “golden opportunity” that initially enabled everyone to chase their creative aspirations but has now returned to its original state.
She expressed that there’s a wealth of potential and tales waiting to be shared, but she’s unsure about the demand and financial feasibility. She mentioned that we once had a ‘golden age,’ but she’s uncertain about its future direction. Despite excellent OTT writing in India currently, she believes there is much more room for improvement.
When questioned about her intentions for launching a streaming project, Rao disclosed that nothing has been officially approved as of now. She hinted at having several series concepts in mind, such as a miniseries, but is undecided on the path she wants to pursue. The filmmaker openly admitted that she frequently ponders over transforming her series ideas into full-length films instead.
