As a dedicated follower of Kiran Rao’s illustrious career, I am nothing short of ecstatic about her latest achievement with Laapataa Ladies. This remarkable woman has once again proven that she is not just a gifted filmmaker but also an unparalleled storyteller who can touch the hearts of millions.
As a lifestyle expert, I’m thrilled to share that I had the honor to be part of Kiran Rao’s extraordinary team behind Laapataa Ladies. Yesterday (August 9th, 2024), we reached an incredible milestone – our heartwarming storyline captivated the Supreme Court of India! Our slice-of-life rural drama was screened as a vital component in their gender sensitization program, touching the lives of not just the judges, but also their families and other court staff. It’s moments like these that remind us of the impactful stories we have the privilege to create.
Following the film’s debut, Kiran spoke with Law Today within the courthouse grounds and expressed her joy by saying, “It’s fantastic to be here. I feel so privileged…” When queried if future projects might involve a courtroom drama after her positive experience inside the court, Kiran responded, “I’d certainly welcome it. In fact, I wished I could have stayed there all day. So, yes, possibly in the future.”
Rao was subsequently questioned about the Laapataa Ladies being selected for the Gender Sensitization Training at the Supreme Court. In response, the director of Dhobi Ghat expressed his profound gratitude for the opportunity to screen our film for the judges, their families, and staff, particularly during the 75th anniversary year of this esteemed institution. Consequently, he feels extremely honored to be part of this role.
In September 8th, 2023, the premiere of Laapataa Ladies took place at the 48th Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), before hitting theaters on March 1st, 2024. During its cinema showings and subsequent release on Netflix, it received widespread acclaim and outperformed other films in terms of popularity.
Laapataa Ladies was created by Kiran Rao, Aamir Khan, and Jyoti Deshpande, with Nitanshi Goel, Pratibha Ranta, Sparsh Shrivastava, Chhaya Kadam, and Ravi Kishan playing significant parts. This film centers around two newly-wed brides who mistakenly end up on each other’s husbands’ trains during their journey to their respective homes. Ultimately, this mix-up leads to a positive transformation in both of their lives.
Kiran Rao has directed only two films, Dhobi Ghat and Laapataa Ladies, with a gap of nearly 13 years between them. She has, however, been involved in producing many other notable films such as Peepli Live, Dangal, Talaash, Delhi Belly, Secret Superstar, Rubaru Roshni, and more. In addition to this, she presented the drama movie Ship of Theseus in 2013 and served as an associate producer for Jaane Tu… Ya Jaane Na.
