The renowned detective character Benoit Blanc, portrayed superbly by Daniel Craig, will reappear this year on Netflix to unravel another mystery in Rian Johnson’s next “whodunit” titled “Wake Up Dead Man.” Following tantalizing hints from the streaming platform and the director, fans can now anticipate the release date of the third installment. Johnson launched his murder-mystery series with the Academy Award-nominated film “Knives Out” in 2019, which brought Craig’s enigmatic detective to life. The character made a comeback for a second outing in “Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery,” which was exclusively streamed on Netflix in 2021. Johnson aims to conclude the “Knives Out” trilogy (which may expand into a full-fledged franchise, given the success of the upcoming third installment) with “Wake Up Dead Man.
At Netflix’s “Next on Netflix” event, they finally revealed the specific release timeframe for the upcoming series “Wake Up Dead Man”. Previously, fans could only speculate based on the hint “2025”, which Johnson often shared in his social media posts from behind-the-scenes. However, we now have a more definite timeline: Fall 2025. During this presentation, a fresh promotional image for “Wake Up Dead Man” was displayed. The image (see below) depicts Josh O’Connor and Craig’s detective character in a church setting, with the former appearing to be playing a priest in the series.
Wake Up Dead Man persists in the series’ knack for assembling an impressive lineup of acting talents. The first two films showcased the skills of Ana de Armas, Jamie Lee Curtis, Chris Evans, Michael Shannon, Toni Collette, Edward Norton, Kate Hudson, Dave Bautista, Kathryn Hahn, and several others. It seems that Wake Up Dead Man might be elevating the franchise’s casting to unprecedented heights. The latest installment boasts Josh O’Connor, Josh Brolin, Glenn Close, Mila Kunis, Kerry Washington, Jeremy Renner, Cailee Spaeny, Andrew Scott, Daryl McCormack, and Thomas Haden Church as potential characters.
‘Knives Out’ Could Be Much Bigger Than a Trilogy
Rian Johnson’s movie titled “Wake Up Dead Man,” slated for release in 2025, is generating much excitement due to the director’s success with his recent films and the successful Peacock series “Poker Face” featuring Natasha Lyonne. Last August, it was announced that the filming of “Wake Up Dead Man” had been completed, with Johnson sharing a mysterious image from the set. As of now, only a black-and-white photo of Daniel Craig as character Benoit Blanc with a fresh hairdo and an image of a church have been revealed. Fans are eagerly awaiting a trailer release in the near future, though no official announcement has been made yet.
Regarding the potential longevity of the franchise, Craig expresses his desire for it to continue past a trilogy. With 15 years under his belt as James Bond, starting with Casino Royale in 2006 and ending with No Time to Die in 2021, Craig has a wealth of experience leading major franchises. Despite the physical toll that playing 007 took on him, he feels no burnout or fatigue about portraying Benoit Blanc for as long as Johnson continues writing the stories. In his words, “If Johnson keeps writing them like that, then yes, I will play it.” He even lightheartedly noted that compared to Bond, playing Benoit Blanc is easier on the body.
