As someone who has spent over two decades immersed in the intricate world of Bollywood, I find Konkona Sen Sharma’s recent interview not just enlightening but also heart-wrenchingly authentic. Her insights into the deeply entrenched gender dynamics and hierarchies on film sets are a stark reminder of the industry’s long-ignored reality.
On movie sets in the past, many actors and female crew members have spoken out about being mistreated, yet these issues often go ignored. In a recent interview, Konkona Sen Sharma shed light on some startling realities within the film industry. She discussed how a system of power, or ‘hierarchy’, is prevalent on sets, favoring certain individuals based on their gender, social class, or caste. Furthermore, Sen Sharma expressed her dismay at observing the mistreatment of women and voiced her worry about the multitude of unreported instances of sexual harassment in the industry.
During a frank conversation with Sucharita Tyagi on her YouTube platform, Konkona Sen Sharma brought up the unjust power dynamics prevalent within the industry. She underscored that movie sets frequently operate under a strict hierarchy, where the level of respect and resources one receives can be influenced by factors such as their gender, social class, or caste.
In a nutshell, it’s incredibly frustrating, steeped in outdated power dynamics. It’s like a labyrinth of rules that dictate seating, food choices, restroom locations, and acceptable behavior. It feels like some people can do as they please without consequence.
Beyond this point, she voiced her worries about the unfair treatment of women. The 44-year-old actress, who has been in the entertainment industry for more than two decades, disclosed that only older women are given respect on set. Everyone else, including other female crew members, is often viewed as mere props or tools.
Sharma expressed, “People are consistently subjected to pressure. It’s the continuous small stressors that you find everywhere. Working in such an environment is challenging. Just observing it is tough; I can barely fathom what it would be like to actually experience it.
Konkona delved deeply into the topic, pointing out that numerous instances of sexual misconduct on movie sets remain unreported. As the star of Wake Up Sid, she found this situation troubling yet showed admiration for the women who persevered through such challenging work conditions.
Professionally, Konkona Sen Sharma recently appeared in Killer Soup. Currently, she’s engrossed in shooting her upcoming movie, titled Metro… Inside the Dinosaurs’ Era.
