The movie spotlights Soori and Anna Ben as the main characters, with Sivakarthikeyan serving as producer under his production house SK Productions. With a global tour to various film festivals, Kottukkaali generated a great deal of anticipation. However, does the movie meet the high expectations set by the hype? Let’s examine it.

In the realm of road dramas, the movie titled “Kottukkaali” or “The Adamant Girl” unfolds. The narrative primarily focuses on the protagonist Meena, portrayed by Anna Ben, whose family perceives her as being possessed and intends to take her to a Seer for exorcism.
As the group travels along, they encounter multiple challenges fueled by their individual desires, convictions, and folklore. The narrative focuses on how they conquer these obstacles to ultimately find the Seer, with the climax revolving around the events that unfold afterward.

Yet, PS Vinothraj skillfully engages and captivates viewers with his unique storytelling approach. In truth, several thoughtful decisions were made to enhance the viewing experience of this film.
In this film, there’s a conscious decision to forgo any background music, starting from the very first frame. Instead, director PS Vinothraj employs natural sounds such as leaves rustling, crows cawing, etc., which become the dominant background noises. At first, one might expect some musical score, but as the narrative unfolds, it becomes clear that the absence of music enhances the film’s raw and authentic feel.
One point worth noting and commending is the exceptional camera work by Sakthivel. His creative use of single shots and deliberate, raw camera movements significantly contribute to the authentic, rural atmosphere of the film. Additionally, it’s crucial to acknowledge the lighting department as another key element that stands out. The cinematographers skillfully employed natural light in a manner that effectively conveyed and enhanced the narrative of the movie.
In addition to the film’s visual effects, the sound team also deserves recognition. The way they captured real-world sounds, created foley effects, and then seamlessly blended and mixed them gives Kottukkaali a distinctive feel that sets it apart from other films, offering a unique auditory experience for viewers.
Previously stated, Kottukkaali explores multiple societal taboos such as superstitions, patriarchy, misogyny, domestic abuse, among others. Instead of simply listing these issues, the film contrasts them with contemporary times. For instance, Soori’s character Pandi supports Anna Ben’s character Meena in furthering her education at college. Yet, this same character shows extreme anger when Meena develops feelings for a boy from a lower caste.
In another part of the story, members from the group privately debate that Meena needs to see a doctor rather than a fortune teller due to their uncertainties. P.S. Vinothraj skillfully blends tradition and contemporary elements in his character portrayals. The filmmaker masterfully presents a comical critique of societal prejudices.
Furthermore, Vinothraj has creatively employed diverse animals to symbolize the characters within his movie. Essentially, this movie serves as an allegorical journey through persistent stigmas and societal challenges that exist, not only in rural areas, but also in our nation’s urban regions.

What does not work in Kottukkaali
In Kottukkaali, a potential flaw might be found in its scripting. Despite PS Vinothraj’s efforts to enrich the narrative with metaphors and thoughtfully crafted scenes throughout the movie, the film seems to falter towards the conclusion. The ending appears rather sudden, leaving viewers yearning for more closure.
In my expert opinion, there are certain moments within the film that have been deliberately repeated and prolonged, keeping the visuals stationary for a moment or two longer than necessary. However, despite these minor inconveniences in Kottukkaali, they fail to diminish the extraordinary craftsmanship with which PS Vinothraj has created this social satire.
Performances in Kottukkaali

In her career thus far, Anna Ben delivers one of her finest performances as Meena in “Kumbalangi Nights.” Despite having few lines, Meena’s character conveys much through her pauses and actions, a testament to Anna Ben’s skill. Moreover, it is notable that “Kottukkaali” serves as Anna Ben’s debut in Tamil cinema.
In Kottukkaali, it’s clear that Soori’s character, Pandi, stands as a strong figure. Pandi is a complex individual who strives to evolve and embrace modernity, yet he remains constrained by the superstitions, traditions, and conventions of his upbringing. His maturity often emerges from his struggle to suppress his ingrained habits. On screen, Soori skillfully breathes life into this character.
The performances by the supporting cast should not go unnoticed as well. The characters together successfully communicate the rustic feel of the film to the audience, bringing the world PS Vinothraj has created to life.
Verdict of Kottukkaali
In essence, Kottukkaali stands out as a unique cinematic exploration within Indian cinema, boasting exceptional qualities.
