As a lifelong cinephile and critic, I have seen my fair share of cinematic triumphs and disasters alike. The recent remarks made by Tony Vinciquerra, former CEO of Sony Pictures, regarding the alleged negative impact of film criticism on the performance of Madame Web and Kraven the Hunter at the box office, strike me as a misguided attempt to deflect responsibility for the studio’s lackluster offerings.
The challenge in creating a cinematic universe lies in having an initial explosion of captivating intellectual properties (IP) to fuel a production company’s lineup. It can be said that Sony Pictures has struggled to capture audience interest with their Spider-Man-absent films recently. After a financially dismal year at the box office, Sony Pictures CEO Tony Vinciquerra has pointed fingers at the media, whom he believes are directly responsible for the underperformance of films like ‘Venom’ and ‘Men in Black: International’. In an interview with the LA Times, as reported by Bleeding Cool, Vinciquerra expressed his views on the recent critical reception to Sony’s corner of the Marvel universe.
Let’s discuss Madame Web briefly. It didn’t fare well in cinemas due to harsh criticism from the media. However, it wasn’t a poor film and performed exceptionally on Netflix. It seems that for some unexplained reason, the press chose not to support films like Kraven and Madame Web, leading the critics to tear them apart. Interestingly, they did the same with Venom, but the audience adored Venom, turning it into a massive success. These movies are far from terrible; they were simply hard-hit by critical reviews in the media.
The movie Madame Web was considered a flop since it barely managed to recoup its $100 million budget, considering the total worldwide box office earnings. On the other hand, Kraven the Hunter‘s domestic box office performance is projected to be one of the poorest returns for a superhero film thus far. This is not an encouraging sign for minor characters from Sony’s version of the Marvel universe.
Are Critics All-Powerful?
Vinciquerra’s claim that unfavorable reviews deterred audiences from watching movies like Madame Web and Kraven the Hunter seems questionable, as many critically panned films have still proven to be box office successes, such as a significant portion of the Transformers series, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and the Twilight Saga.
These essential targets were being paid off with stacks of chilly, solid money to heal their injuries. Movies can be either well-received by critics or not and still resonate with viewers, contributing to box office triumphs. One reason the Spidey spin-off films didn’t perform is due to a lack of the key element that ensures success in a Spider-Man world: Spider-Man himself. The Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) and Avengers series found success, in part, by gradually constructing a path to victory with legendary heroes, until they had amassed enough goodwill to then begin squandering it with films like Eternals. Was there an appetite for a solo origin story focusing on a secondary Spider-Man villain? Could the MCU have prospered if their fifth film was solely dedicated to Ivan Vanko without Iron Man?
Although the Sony Spider-Man universe currently appears to be on hold, it’s been confirmed that Tom Holland will continue portraying Spider-Man in another movie, scheduled for release in theaters at some point in the future. This upcoming film, as of now without a title, is slated to hit cinemas on July 24, 2026.
