Kristin Cavallari Says ‘Laguna Beach’ Cast Was “Taken Advantage Of”

As a gamer and avid follower of reality TV, I can’t help but be intrigued by the journey of Kristin Cavallari, a former star of MTV’s “Laguna Beach.” I remember watching her on the show during its prime, and it’s fascinating to see how her experiences back then have shaped her life.

As a gamer, I can tell you that back in the mid-2000s, there was this huge wave of reality TV shows taking over the small screen. And one of the stars who truly shined among them was Kristin Cavallari, who rose to fame on MTV’s “Laguna Beach.” This series followed a group of high school teens, and boy, did Cavallari capture our attention!

In a recent interview with Bustle, published on Thursday, Jordana Jolie Cavallari opened up about growing up during the surge of reality TV and the phenomenon of “franken-biting” or manipulating sentence fragments to create a false narrative. On the show, Cavallari, who was 17 at the time, was depicted as the “villain,” while Lauren Conrad took on the role of the “good girl.” The two women appeared to be vying for Cavallari’s boyfriend Stephen Colletti’s affections. The series, which aired on MTV between 2004 and 2006, became an instant hit, launching some of its cast members into stardom and paving the way for MTV’s next successful reality series, The Hills. However, Cavallari’s portrayal on the show brought her some challenges.

Cavallari previously believed that she was the only one who received a raw deal from MTV at “Laguna Beach,” taking things personally. However, upon reflection, she now understands that everyone else went through similar experiences. In simpler terms, she felt singled out before but now recognizes that everyone was treated unfairly by MTV.

As a gamer reflecting on my past experiences, I recall feeling young and vulnerable when certain elements of the game took control of our actions. But I’m not here to dwell on the negatives. In fact, I’m incredibly grateful for having been a part of that game. Looking back, it can be both an unsettling and a rewarding experience – one that left us feeling manipulated, yet appreciative for the journey.

During those formative years, around 17 or 18, Cavallari shared, people are still figuring out their identity. She acknowledged, “I didn’t have a clear understanding of who I was back then. But looking back, it helped me realize that I wasn’t like the character on TV, and if there was any resemblance, I chose not to be. In hindsight, those experiences shaped me into a kinder person.”

Although there’s been growing demand for a reality TV stars’ union lately, Cavallari remains uninterested. She stated, “Everything has turned out just as it was meant to, and it brought me to where I am now. Therefore, no, I wouldn’t make any changes.”

For several years, Cavallari has achieved personal triumphs beyond reality TV. She started her own business, Uncommon James, offering minimalist home decor, jewelry, and clothing. Additionally, she hosts the “Let’s Be Honest” podcast and introduced a fragrance line, as well as new skincare products. However, Cavallari is looking forward to leaving Hollywood behind once her children with ex-husband Jay Cutler finish high school.

She expressed that even if her fame vanished, she would still be content. Her plan was to labor for a couple of more years before retiring, and afterward, she intended to establish a casual coffee shop near a picturesque seaside village as a pastime.

I can relate to that statement as I, too, have reached a point in my career where I feel the need for a change. After dedicating countless hours and energy into my profession since I was young, I, too, crave a more laid-back lifestyle. Like her, I have set a financial goal for myself, beyond which I plan to retire from my active engagement in my field. My journey has been long and arduous, filled with late nights, missed deadlines, and countless challenges. But now, all I want is to unwind and enjoy the fruits of my labor. Having given my all since I was a teenager, I, too, am weary.
