As a gamer who has spent countless hours immersed in various virtual worlds, I must confess that the real-world drama surrounding “Wicked” has piqued my curiosity more than any in-game conflict ever could. Being an avid fan of both the original “The Wizard of Oz” and its prequel, I found myself captivated by the movie’s release, only to be further intrigued by the backlash it received from One Million Moms.

Lately, audiences have been captivated by the new movie adaptation of “Wicked“. This big-screen version of the popular Broadway musical (which itself is based on a book) has been thriving, receiving praise from both critics and regular viewers. Additionally, it shattered box office records before Thanksgiving and continues to make money. Meanwhile, it seems that the prequel to “The Wizard of Oz” has attracted the criticism of One Million Moms, with actress Kristin Chenoweth speaking out against the backlash.

One Million Moms is a group that has traditionally spoken out against parts of the media they consider inappropriate. Lately, they’ve expressed concerns about the movie “Wicked,” directed by Jon M. Chu, on their website. They criticized the film for not only depicting witchcraft but also for promoting LGBTQ issues, particularly towards families and children. The activists claimed that Universal Pictures’ production did this by presenting characters who are gay or queer, or are portrayed by actors who identify as such.

This information was recently shared by Out Magazine on the publication’s Instagram account. It was there that Kristin Chenoweth – who originated the role of Glinda in the stage play that inspired the film – decided to drop a comment. The Tony winner began by taking a quick jab at the organization’s title before sharing her take on the 2024 movie schedule entry:

It’s commonly understood that the ‘One Million Moms’ organization is actually much smaller, perhaps only a few hundred members. Yet, I am a Christian woman who played Glinda, and I find their negative rhetoric challenging. However, I still try to show them love because they may not fully grasp the concept of girl power. If you want to witness empowerment, then go watch WICKED, be it on stage or in a movie theater. 💕💕💕💕😂💕

1MMM (One Million Moms) has criticized various well-known entertainments, TV shows, movies, and public figures over time. In 2020, they expressed disapproval towards Hallmark for intending to include LGBTQ-friendly content in its Christmas movie lineup that year. Moreover, earlier in 2024, the organization also criticized Disney’s Star Wars show, The Acolyte. They particularly objected to this sci-fi series due to a storyline about a coven of witches who had learned self-reproduction techniques.

I Liked The Wicked Movie A Lot Better Than The Broadway Show, And There Are A Few Reasons Why

Although Wicked, which has received high praise, is currently experiencing some criticism, it appears to be unaffected by it at present. The film primarily explores the early bond between Elphaba (who eventually becomes the Wicked Witch of the West) and Galinda (later Glinda). Social media platforms have been abuzz with discussions about the lead actors’ performances, particularly Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande, as well as the moving songs and other aspects. At the moment, Jon M. Chu’s fantasy movie has grossed close to half a billion dollars globally, with the figure continuing to increase.

Kristen Chenoweth heaped high compliments on the movie, focusing particularly on Ariana Grande’s performance as her replacement. The singer of “Thank U, Next” is gathering multiple award nominations for her role, and so is the film overall. If One Million Moms persist in their stance, they might consider taking further action against the fantasy film during awards season. And if their views don’t change, it could mean they may adopt a similar tactic when Wicked Part Two premieres in theaters next year.

Currently, you have the opportunity to watch “Wicked” in theaters across the country, and its sequel, “Part Two,” is scheduled to fly onto screens nationwide on November 21, 2025.
