Kumail Nanjiani Says He Relates to His “Christmas-All-the-Time Guy” on ‘Only Murders in the Building’

As a die-hard fan of Kumail Nanjiani‘s work, I must say his connection to the character he plays in “Only Murders in the Building” is quite intriguing! The Christmas-All-the-Time Guy, Rudy Thurber, might seem excessive for some, but as someone who moved to America after missing out on traditional Christmases, I can understand and even empathize with his enthusiasm.

Kumail Nanjiani can relate to his Only Murders in the Building season four character.

On Friday, the actor dropped by “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” and gave a quick sneak peek at the ongoing season of the Emmy-winning show. In this series, he plays the character known as Rudy Thurber, or the “Christmas-All-the-Time Guy,” who lives in the Arconia building.

He shared that he’s a huge Christmas enthusiast, which is fantastic in my book. He adores Christmas deeply, and for him, celebrating it wasn’t difficult. You see, when he moved here at age 20, he had never celebrated Christmas before. But then, all of a sudden, he experienced Christmas for the first time at that age. It was absolutely amazing for him.

Instead of rushing to adorn their homes with holiday decorations immediately after Halloween, much like some enthusiastic Christmas lovers do, Nanjiani prefers to wait until early December, demonstrating a “sensible” approach, he humorously noted.

Jimmy Kimmel expressed that there wasn’t another potential roommate he’d find more unappealing than the Christmas-All-The-Time Guy, and the actor from Eternals concurred, particularly in the context of living in Los Angeles.

He remarked, “Here, it’s somewhat reminiscent of Christmas, even in December, while driving around and experiencing unusually high temperatures. Yet, ironically, I find myself humming the well-known Christmas carol, ‘It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas.’ It seems odd, as if I were losing touch with reality, listening to Christmas songs in the middle of July.

During his interview, Nanjiani additionally shared memories of collaborating with Steve Martin and Martin Short on the show “Only Murders in the Building,” which has already secured a fifth season.

He confessed that he was quite apprehensive about working with comedy greats, as he used to watch their films growing up and didn’t want to come across as overly enthusiastic or star-struck.

There’s just something about their energy that is absolutely fantastic,” I found myself remarking as the star of ‘Welcome to Chippendales’. In truth, hearing Martin Short refer to Steve Martin as a silver-haired scoundrel left me in awe, thinking, “This is living the dream at its finest.

The present season of the comedy show focuses on the primary trio – Charles Hayden-Savage, Oliver Putnam, and Mabel Mora, played by Martin Short, Steve Martin, and Selena Gomez – as they delve into the murder mystery surrounding Charles’ longtime friend and stunt double, Sazz Pataki (Jane Lynch).

In this new installation of the series, Kumail Nanjiani is among several fresh faces joining the cast. He will be alongside Eva Longoria, Molly Shannon, Eugene Levy, Zach Galifianakis, Melissa McCarthy, and others. Meryl Streep returns to her role from season three as Loretta Durkin.

Each Tuesday, new episodes for the fourth season of “Only Murders in the Building” become available on Hulu, culminating in the season’s final episode on October 29th.
