As a seasoned observer of the dynamic world of Bollywood, I have witnessed countless tales of stardom and camaraderie unfold before my eyes. Yet, few stories have captivated me quite like the clandestine wedding of Aamir Khan and Kiran Rao, a secret that was meticulously guarded by none other than director Kunal Kohli.
On October 28, 2024, director Kunal Kohli is celebrating his birthday, marking his prominent influence in Bollywood. He’s particularly renowned for producing some of the most cherished romantic comedies, such as Hum Tum, Mujhse Dosti Karoge!, and Fanaa, which remain popular with audiences. As we acknowledge his impact on cinema today, we also recall an intriguing incident from Fanaa’s production when Aamir Khan asked for a brief break to secretly wed Kiran Rao and pleaded with Kohli to keep it confidential.
Aamir made a secret plan to get married at his farmhouse in Panchgani. He wanted to keep this secret until the wedding day itself. Since his wedding date clashed with the filming of Fanaa, Aamir asked director Kunal Kohli if he could take a short break from shooting for the ceremony.
In an interview with Bollywood Hungama, Kunal shared that back in May or June of 2005, Aamir asked him to grant him a ten-day break, from December 23, 2005, through January 3, 2006.
Kunal stated, “When I inquired about the cause, he disclosed he was marrying Kiran Rao. I offered my congratulations, but he cautioned me not to share this information with anyone. However, Kunal contended that he would need to inform his producer, Aditya Chopra about it. Aamir refused.
Initially, Kunal Kohli found himself in a disagreement with Aamir Khan over the necessity of informing Aditya Chopra, the producer, about Aamir’s plan for a 10-day absence due to his upcoming secret wedding.
On the contrary, the PK actor firmly requested confidentiality, stating that disclosing the information could result in unnecessary attention. Aamir assured Kohli that aside from occasional breaks, he would always be ready for filming whenever required.
When Aditya Chopra eventually spotted a free spot in the schedule, he became curious and asked Kunal, thinking it could be due to some holiday celebrations. In a dilemma between truthfulness and discretion, Kunal found himself at a loss for words to offer an explanation.
It wasn’t until around October or November of 2005, when Aamir officially declared his marriage in public, that Aditya eventually grasped why Kunal had been pushing for a pause in filming.
