Artist Alex Israel and the eyewear brand Oliver Peoples are aiming to find a stylish method to collect donations for the rebuilding efforts after the wildfires in Los Angeles.
Together, they collaborated on a special collection of sunglasses, the Oliver Sun line by Oliver Peoples, where all proceeds were given to Steadfast LA’s modular housing project. This initiative aims to assist underprivileged residents in rebuilding their homes in Altadena, Malibu, Pasadena, and Pacific Palisades after the devastating wildfires in January.
Or, more concisely:
They teamed up on a charity sunglasses line called Oliver Sun by Oliver Peoples, with all sales benefiting Steadfast LA’s modular housing project for fire-affected residents in specific areas.
The Oliver Sun eyewear line comes in three color options: black, tortoise, and clear. These frames showcase a unique core wire, intricately etched with a design inspired by Israel’s sculptural series and local surf culture known as the fin motif. Additionally, they feature a fresh, pop-art twist on the original 1987 Oliver Peoples symbol logo, another tribute to Israel’s creative influence.
Born and brought up in Los Angeles, Israel expressed that the project holds a profound significance for him due to his ancestral ties. He emphasized the importance of contributing to the community and preserving the unique charm that makes Los Angeles so special.
The Oliver Sun sunglasses served as my initial inspiration – sleek and everlasting, they are the pair I wear regularly. I’ve always admired the Oliver Peoples emblem; it’s minimalistic yet still whimsical, evoking memories of the geometric structures and post-modern designs that were prevalent in L.A. during the ’80s and ’90s for me. In this partnership, my aim was to highlight and honor this logo, as well as reinterpret it in conjunction with another iconic Los Angeles symbol: the surfboard fin. The fin represents Los Angeles’ beach culture, our link to marine life, and the exhilaration of surfing. In French, ‘fin’ means ‘the end,’ but here it stands for a driving force to push forward. To me, that encapsulates what this city is all about: Renewal, creativity, and the liberty to persist.
For the project, Justin Campbell was the one behind the camera. Israel and Oliver Peoples selected models like Diplo, Miranda Kerr, and Eric Nam. “Being a brand originating from Los Angeles, the city is the heart of all we create,” stated Rocco Basilico, president of Oliver Peoples. “Alex captures the essence of this city in such an impactful manner, and this partnership showcases the charm when design, intention, and community merge together.
The teamwork between Alex Israel and Oliver Peoples has been launched online and at their boutiques, priced at $675 each.
