Laapataa Ladies: Burqa City director wants to ‘have a discussion’ with Kiran Rao directorial’s production team about its similarities with his film

Kiran Rao’s production, Laapataa Ladies, faced criticism when people noticed similarities between its plot and the Arabic short film, Burqa City, on social media. Although writer Biplab Goswami has explained his stance on this issue, the director of Burqa City also responded to the controversy and expressed his wish to discuss the matter with Laapataa Ladies’ creators.

In a recent chat with IFP, Burqa City’s director Fabrice Bracq admitted that he hadn’t seen Kiran Rao’s movie Laapataa Ladies until its resemblances were pointed out to him. Upon watching it, he expressed feeling both shocked and disappointed as he learned about the film’s widespread success in India and its Oscar nomination.

Additionally, he voiced his worry, emphasizing that he had originally intended to transform his brief movie into a full-length feature film, an idea he now feels may no longer be feasible.

After being inquired about his plans to tackle the matter following the viewing of an Indian satire, he replied, “At this point, I’m undecided, but it seems like I will be meeting with the Laapataa Ladies’ production team next.

Furthermore, Fabrice also acknowledged the parallel aspects between his movie and Laapataa Ladies, as both portray a ‘gentle, loving, innocent spouse’, a ‘harsh, detestable’ husband, a ‘corrupt, violent’ police officer, and distinctly a picture of a veiled woman.

As a fervent admirer, let me share with you an intriguing tidbit: The director hinted at a striking resemblance in the climactic plot twist. It turns out that, just like in Burqa City, our heroine intentionally fled from her abusive spouse – a pivotal storyline point that’s sure to captivate us!

In our chat, the director of Burqa City disclosed that his movie was penned and filmed in the years 2017 and 2018, then made its debut at film festivals in 2019. Notably, it was exhibited at two Indian film events: Kolkata’s Kalpanirjhar International Short Film Festival (December 2019) and Auroville’s Auroville Film Festival (January 2020), where it also received an award.

Contrarily, Biplab Goswami, the author behind Laapataa Ladies, made a statement on Saturday, asserting that he had registered Laapataa Ladies with the Screenwriters Association in 2014 and submitted a feature-length script titled Two Brides to SWA in 2018. He expressed his dismay over these accusations, stating they not only discredit his work as a writer, but also the hard work of the entire filmmaking crew.
