LACMA Names Baz Luhrmann, Simone Leigh as Art+Film Gala Honorees

As a gamer with a keen eye for art and cinema, I must say that this year’s LACMA Art+Film Gala is shaping up to be a spectacle not to be missed! The combination of Simone Leigh’s captivating artwork and Baz Luhrmann‘s cinematic masterpieces promises an evening brimming with creativity and inspiration.

Honorees for this year’s edition of LACMA‘s Art+Film Gala have been revealed.

At the 13th annual event taking place this coming Saturday, November 2nd, multi-talented artist Simone Leigh and acclaimed filmmaker Baz Luhrmann will be celebrated. The evening will also include a performance by the popular musical artist Charli XCX, who has been generating buzz with her latest album “Brat,” which has become one of the summer’s top sellers.

As a gamer, I’m thrilled to share that Eva Chow and Leonardo DiCaprio will once again take on their co-chair roles for an event they’ve led since 2011 – a role I’m looking forward to participating in. Gucci, a brand I’ve admired for its past involvement, is joining forces with LACMA again for this exciting gathering.

As a devoted admirer, I’m thrilled to share that the funds raised from the gala will be channeled towards amplifying LACMA’s endeavor to integrate film more profoundly into the museum’s exhibits. This investment also supports LACMA’s comprehensive mission, encompassing special exhibitions, acquisitions, and educational programs that delve into the intricate relationship between art and cinema.

“Simone Leigh is recognized as one of the most compelling and influential artists working today, skillfully blending various artistic styles while emphasizing Black women as key subjects in a thought-provoking manner,” Michael Govan, CEO and Wallis Annenberg Director at LACMA, expressed in a statement. Currently, her work can be seen in exhibitions at both the LACMA and the California African American Museum (CAAM).

“Over the past three decades, Baz Luhrmann has built a powerful collection of emotionally resonant films, fueled by his creativity and enthusiasm,” Govan noted. “We’re thrilled to recognize him together with Simone, as we pay tribute to their exceptional achievements in the world of cinema.”

“Eva Chow, one of the Gala’s co-chairs, expressed her enthusiasm about assembling an exceptional team to honor Simone Leigh and Baz Luhrmann’s remarkable achievements. She acknowledged Gucci, our loyal partner, for their deep benevolence towards LACMA and their ongoing faith in the influence of art and cinema. Lastly, she shared her anticipation for Charli XCX, our fantastic musical guest, to create a memorable performance that will make this event truly special.”

Luhrmann is a renowned Australian film director, who gained fame with films like “Romeo + Juliet” from 1996, “Moulin Rouge,” “Australia,” “The Great Gatsby,” and his latest biopic, “Elvis,” which was nominated for an Academy Award.

Concurrently, Simone Leigh is predominantly recognized for her ceramic and bronze sculptures, yet her versatile artistry transcends to video and installation pieces as well. Her work has graced some of the world’s most prestigious museums such as the Guggenheim, Tate Gallery, and others. At present, her art can be seen in exhibitions at both LACMA and the California African American Museum (CAAM). In the year 2022, Leigh was privileged to represent the United States at the 59th Venice Biennale with her exhibition titled Simone Leigh: Sovereignty.
