Lady Gaga on Changing Her Singing Voice to Play Harley Quinn in ‘Joker: Folie À Deux’: “Removing the Technicality”

As a dedicated gamer and avid moviegoer, I’m always thrilled to hear about unique and intriguing performances in films, especially when it comes from artists I admire. The news that Lady Gaga underwent a significant transformation for her role as Harley Quinn in “Joker: Folie À Deux” piqued my interest instantly.

Lady Gaga shares insights on how she transformed her vocal style for portraying Harley Quinn (also known as Lee) in the movie “Joker: Folie À Deux.”

In an interview with Empire magazine, the Academy and Grammy award-winning actress, who acts alongside Joaquin Phoenix in Todd Phillips’ musical sequel, shared that her singing experience for the film was completely new to her.

As Lady Gaga, I’m recognized by many, but in this movie, I’m not just being myself. I put in a great deal of effort to embody the character of Lee, adjusting my singing style accordingly so it wouldn’t feel like me as a performer coming through.

The actress in “A Star Is Born” understood that the movie’s music had to be handled sensitively since it played a significant role in the plot.

“How can music seamlessly blend with the conversation instead of suddenly intruding, Lady Gaga pondered. It was a new and unfamiliar experience for her.”

The “Shallow” singer was pushed to discover a new facet of her performing persona, an unexplored side that left fans in awe.

She admitted with a chuckle that there were several off-key notes in her singing portrayal of Lee in the film. As a professional singer, I breathe differently when performing onstage to hit the right pitch and maintain a consistent rhythm. However, Lee wouldn’t have been aware of these techniques. So, I had to abandon my formal training and fully embody who Lee is, setting aside the technical aspects of singing.

In “Joker: Folie À Deux,” the sequel to the 2019 Oscar-winning film “Joker,” failed comedian Arthur Fleck (Phoenix) forms an unlikely connection with Harley Quinn (Gaga) while in Arkham State Hospital. After their release, they embark on a tragic and chaotic journey together.

Phillips shared with Empire how GaGa’s portrayal of Harley Quinn varies from past representations.

In the game of creating this character, there are elements that might seem recognizable from the original source, but it’s really Lady Gaga bringing her unique spin to Harley Quinn. Scott and I were the game masters shaping Harley into a character who, much like Charlie Manson, could captivate followers in her own twisted way. While some traits from the comics remain, we transformed them to fit our vision for this intriguing character.

Joker: Folie À Deux is set to hit theaters Oct. 4.
