Opinion: The first-person supporter finds it intriguing that “Joker: Folie à Deux” was initially presented as a movie musical but has since evolved into something more than just music, with elements such as song and dance numbers used to replace dialogue when characters do not have the words to express themselves. However, it is unclear how it should be described exactly yet.
Initially, when the follow-up to the 2019 blockbuster film “Joker,” titled “Joker: Folie à Deux,” was announced, it seemed clear that the movie would be a musical. However, fans were initially puzzled as this idea contrasted with the psychological approach director Todd Phillips and his team had taken in their portrayal of the Joker. The question on everyone’s mind was: how would they blend a movie musical into this dark narrative?
Lady Gaga, during an interview about her film at the 81st Venice International Film Festival, stated that instead of using traditional dialogue for her characters, she uses music as a means for them to better express themselves since the original dialogue was not sufficient
Todd Phillips Also Says Joker 2 Isn’t a Musical
The film’s production team has avoided categorizing it as a traditional musical on multiple occasions. Although the movie features songs and dance sequences, director Bradley Cooper stated in the past that he finds it challenging to label it a musical film, echoing similar sentiments expressed by Lady Gaga at the Venice Film Festival press conference. During an interview, Cooper said, “‘The majority of the music in the movie is essentially just dialogue. The character Arthur doesn’t have the words to express what he wants to say, so instead, he sings them.'” At this point, Cooper remains uncertain about how best to describe the film
“I prefer not to give the impression that it’s like ‘In the Heights’, with a woman in the store breaking into song and everyone moving the party outside, even the cops dancing. I adore ‘In the Heights’, but I want to avoid any confusion.”
The phrase “Joker: Folie à Deux” can be described as a jukebox musical that uses established songs and hits rather than creating original music. This was famously done by Baz Luhrmann’s “Moulin Rouge!” which turned into a bonafide box office hit and went on to earn eight Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture. “Joker: Folie à Deux” is said to include such hits as “That’s Life,” “For Once in My Life,” and “Get Happy,” among others. All said, the film will reportedly include up to fifteen musical numbers
In an elegant and comprehensible manner: Two years following the first movie, Joker: Folie à Deux introduces Arthur Fleck (Joaquin Phoenix) as a patient at Arkham State Hospital, where he becomes acquainted with Harleen “Lee” Quinzel aka Harley Quinn (Lady Gaga), a music therapist at the hospital. Soon, the two discover themselves bonded by their shared psychoanalysis and delusions, which may result in his emancipation. The movie also features Brendan Gleeson, Catherine Keener and Zazie Beetz
Joker: Folie à Deux
hits screens on Oct. 4.
