Lady Gaga Says Alter Ego Jo Calderone Was a Way to Explore What She “Was Looking for in Men”

It’s hard to forget Lady Gaga‘s alter ego Jo Calderone.

In 2011, I was blown away by Lady Gaga’s cool character, Jo, a mechanic hailing from Sicily, during the MTV Music Video Awards. That night, Jo put on an unforgettable performance of her song “Yoü And I”. She also had the honor of presenting Britney Spears with the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award. There was a bit of a throwback moment when it seemed like they were about to reenact the iconic kiss between Spears and Madonna at that same award show back in 2003, but they stopped just short of it. What an exciting night it was!

Apart from being showcased in the “Yoü and I” music video, it’s worth noting that Jo made their grand entrance to the global stage first, gracing the September 2010 cover of Japanese Men’s Vogue magazine.

Lady Gaga, the singer known for “Born This Way,” recently shared with Them magazine that the character she created served as a means for her to confront her feelings towards men. She explained, “That was a significant moment for me as a woman, to channel all the hidden fear or anger I had about relationships into this one persona.

As a gamer, I’d put it like this: “Back then, I believe ‘Yoü And I’ was the first video where I played multiple versions of myself. I revisited that concept in ‘Mayhem.’ Jo was a significant character for me. Through her, I delved into what I sought in men and perhaps the aspects within myself that I lacked.

Last month, Gaga stated during a polygraph test for Vanity Fair that “Jo is no longer present.” However, when questioned by Them about her statement’s meaning, Gaga clarified, “The character Jo is no longer part of me. I hope Jo has the best in life.

The Academy Award-winning artist shared insights about her upcoming venture, her seventh studio album titled “Mayhem”, and its underlying themes. She expressed, “From the start of my career, I’ve been drawn to the concept of inner turmoil. I’ve always felt a sense of internal conflict – a delicate side alongside an intense one that yearns for expression.” She continued, “For this album, I delved deeply into examining the past 20 years of my life. It’s intriguing how I ultimately chose the name ‘Mayhem’ for the album.

The album will be released on March 7.
