As a seasoned movie buff with a penchant for music and a soft spot for cinematic oddities, I can’t help but feel a thrill of anticipation upon learning about Lady Gaga’s upcoming album “Harlequin.” Having grown up on the soundtracks of films like “The Rocky Horror Picture Show” and “Grease,” I find myself drawn to the jukebox musical genre, and this latest offering from Gaga promises to be a captivating blend of classic tunes and her signature style.
Similar to how Prince once did, Lady Gaga is planning to introduce a 13-track album that aligns with the comic book franchise from Warner Bros., where she plays the role of Harley Quinn in “Joker: Folie à Deux”. This upcoming album is what she will be debuting.
As announced on Lady Gaga’s official X page, the pop sensation, Lady Gaga, revealed that she is set to launch a companion soundtrack album entitled “Harlequin” for the movie Joker: Folie à Deux. This upcoming album will include thirteen tracks by the artist, all related to the film. The release date for “Harlequin” is scheduled for Sep. 27. In her post, Gaga also shared sneak peeks of the album’s cover art and what appears to be a tracklist. Additionally, it has been reported that she plans to unveil another album, tentatively named “LG7,” in the following year.
Joker 2 Album Tracklist Confirms New Recordings of Classic Songs
In the lineup for the album, it’s been verified that the upcoming film “Joker: Folie à Deux” will include popular tunes like “That’s Entertainment” and “That’s Life,” among others, as earlier rumors suggested. When it was initially announced that “Joker: Folie à Deux” would be a musical sequel to the 2019 blockbuster “Joker,” there was much curiosity about what kind of musical the sequel might be. It wasn’t long before we learned that this movie would be a jukebox musical, with modern adaptations of well-known songs, similar to those heard in films like “Moulin Rouge” and “Mamma Mia!”. However, despite the prominent role of music in the film, the creators of “Joker: Folie à Deux,” including Lady Gaga and director Todd Phillips, are hesitant to label it a traditional musical. Instead, they suggest that songs are employed when characters struggle to express their true emotions through spoken dialogue.
Making a companion album to a film is not uncommon, but it’s a practice that isn’t used much anymore. Lady Gaga is walking a similar line that Prince walked in 1989 when he released his eleventh studio album as a companion piece to Tim Burton’s Batman. Due in large part to the popularity of the film during the summer of 1989, Prince’s soundtrack album was number one for six consecutive weeks and went on to be certified double platinum, as well as spawning the number-one single, “Batdance.”
Joker: Folie à Deux has sparked debate among critics since its debut at the 81st Venice International Film Festival, boasting a 63% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Nevertheless, even the most reserved reviews have commended Lady Gaga’s portrayal of Harley Quinn, with some going so far as to suggest that she could be in contention for a Best Supporting Actress Oscar nomination. If nominated, it would mark her second acting nod from the Academy, following her Best Actress nomination for 2018’s A Star Is Born. Interestingly, Lady Gaga did win an Oscar for the original song “Shallow” in that film.
In a twist two years after the 2019 movie, we find Arthur Fleck (Joaquin Phoenix), now a patient at Gotham’s Arkam State Hospital. Here, he encounters and falls in love with a fellow inmate named Lee Quinzel, alias Harley Quinn (Lady Gaga). Their bond deepens due to a mutual madness they share, kindled by music, which eventually stirs Arthur’s supporters into attempting his release from Arkham’s walls.
Joker: Folie à Deux
