As a dedicated follower of the intricate world of Bollywood, I must say that the recent revelation about Laila Majnu’s phone number fiasco has left me both amused and saddened. The life of the assistant director, whose number was unintentionally exposed, is now a living testament to the power of cinema and the unpredictable nature of fan culture. It’s a classic case of “be careful what you wish for,” as they say!
In a scene from Laila Majnu, Avinash Tiwary‘s character Qais Bhatt shares his phone number with Laila (played by Triptii Dimri). Remarkably, the filmmakers overlooked censoring the number, leading viewers to believe it was actually Majnu’s number. Consequently, fans began calling and messaging that actual number, which was operational.
In a recent chat with Mirchi Plus, Laila Majnu’s director Sajid Ali disclosed that the phone number displayed on the big screen during the movie was actually his assistant director’s, who has since become a famous celebrity manager. He lamented, “In our oversight, we neglected to blur the number. Unfortunately, it continues to make his life difficult as he can’t change it. With each re-release, he receives countless messages and he frequently shares screenshots of them with me.”
For those unfamiliar, Imtiaz Ali’s film made another appearance in cinemas following its initial run that was met with sadness. Originally dismissed as a box office flop upon release, it eventually gained cult status over time. On August 9th, the producers decided to re-release Laila Majnu nationwide due to growing audience demand.
As a longtime fan of Indian cinema, I have seen countless retellings of classic stories, but few have captured my heart like this contemporary musical adaptation of the iconic Layla and Majnun folktale. Having grown up listening to tales from my grandparents about these star-crossed lovers, I was initially skeptical about how it would be portrayed in a modern context. However, Ekta Kapoor, Shobha Kapoor, and Preety Ali’s joint production exceeded all expectations, blending timeless romance with catchy music that resonated deeply with me.
Actor from The Madgaon Express posted on his social media platform in response. Tiwary stated, “Thank you for all the affection… I’ve always thought there’s a large group of spectators who don’t speak up… but when they do, their words are simply remarkable! Thank you to the audience (with folded hands emojis)… This is your triumph…I know it was significant for you.”
Following the intense love story depicted in Laila Majnu, Triptii and Avinash’s relationship embodied what passionate lovers might truly appear as. In 2020’s film Bulbbul, they reunited once more, and fans are eagerly awaiting their next collaboration.
