With wildfires persistently posing a danger to extensive areas within Los Angeles, professional sports teams in the city have decided to reschedule their home matches.
Initially, the NHL’s Los Angeles Kings canceled a game set for Wednesday night against the Calgary Flames at Crypto.com Arena. Similarly, the NBA’s Los Angeles Lakers decided to postpone a game with the Charlotte Hornets on Thursday; as of now, new dates for these matches have not been arranged.
(The first sentence was rephrased to “Initially” instead of “The NHL’s Los Angeles Kings were the first to act,” to make it more readable and natural.)
The Lakers are deeply saddened for Los Angeles. Our sympathies go out to everyone affected by this terrible ordeal. We are incredibly thankful for the emergency responders and everyone who steps up during difficult times like these. Tonight’s match has been postponed to prioritize what truly matters today. We stand with you, L.A.
Besides this, Kawhi Leonard, star player of the Clippers, was absent from Wednesday’s game against the Nuggets in Denver to go back to Los Angeles and be with his family who had to evacuate due to the Palisades Fire, as reported by ESPN. Leonard purchased a house in Pacific Palisades in 2021. The Clippers’ next home match is set for Saturday, again against the Hornets; no information has been provided about whether it will proceed as scheduled.
On Monday night, the Los Angeles Rams from the NFL are set to play against the Minnesota Vikings in a wild-card match. The game is currently scheduled at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, but the NFL has an alternative plan to shift it to State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona (where the Arizona Cardinals play) if necessary.
On Sunday, the women’s basketball teams from UCLA and USC, both ranked among the top five, have home games lined up (against Northwestern and Penn State respectively). _The Hollywood Reporter_ has reached out to both institutions regarding potential schedule adjustments, and will provide updates should there be any replies. Meanwhile, the men’s basketball teams from both schools are currently away on trips, competing against Big Ten opponents this weekend.
Both Loyola Marymount and Pepperdine have delayed their scheduled women’s basketball matches that were set for Thursday. These two institutions may also postpone their respective men’s and women’s basketball matches planned for Saturday, though these games could potentially be rescheduled too.
As a concerned resident, I’m closely monitoring the situation with the Palisades Fire and the Eaton Fire near Altadena. These blazes, intensified by powerful winds and extremely arid conditions, are among the most significant wildfires currently ravaging Los Angeles County. Regrettably, over 180,000 people have been forced to evacuate, and tragically, five lives have been lost due to the Eaton Fire.
