As a devoted cinema enthusiast, I must say that the initial two episodes of “Landman” have left an indelible impression on me. Billy Bob Thornton’s character, Tommy Norris, has won over more fans than John Dutton from “Yellowstone” ever could, and the first season’s climax saw this oil-centric patriarch enduring significant injuries at the hands of the Mexican cartel. Meanwhile, Ali Larter’s Angela and Michelle Randolph’s Ainsley have been spreading positive energy while manipulating Mitchell Slaggert’s Ryder for his dancing talents.

It’s worth noting that the character’s arrival, hinted at in an old casting report, was particularly intriguing. However, I have reservations about how well the episode as a whole succeeded, given that the Season 1 finale, like the rest of the season, didn’t fully utilize Demi Moore’s co-star potential. We’ll delve deeper into this issue later on.

Andy Garcia’s Galino Finally Arrived In A More Peaceful Way Than Expected

In the lineup of premier TV finales for 2025, the series Landman didn’t disappoint, offering a mix of excitement ranging from intense explosions, brutal close-combat scenes, and humorous incidents at strip clubs. The initial two elements echoed the National Guard airstrike test in Episode 8, which unfortunately resulted in the destruction of a cartel vehicle and its passengers. If Alex Meraz’s character, Jiminez, hadn’t been stopped from torturing Tommy to death, it could have spelled the end of his shaky alliance with the criminal organization altogether.

Luckily for Billy Bob Thornton’s character, Jiminez was only able to inflict a few blows to the face, strike him on the hand with a hammer, drive a nail into his thigh, and pour gasoline over his head covered in a hood. Just as Jiminez was about to cause more harm, a series of gunshots echoed from the gentlemen’s club above them, killing Jiminez at the hands of his own organization.

In my perspective as a cinephile, it was during our encounter with Tommy that we finally got some screen-time with Andy Garcia’s character, Galino – the elusive cartel kingpin whose character and intentions have largely remained enigmatic to viewers due to his brief on-screen presence spanning about seven minutes. It’s hard to tell for certain, but it seemed like Jerry Jones had more dialogue in the penultimate episode, perhaps because he regaled us with a lengthy anecdote.

Looking forward to seeing more interactions between Galino and Tommy in the upcoming seasons, as their unique dynamics could be crucial for maintaining peace without further escalation. Given Galino’s ruthless actions against Jimenez’s team, it’ll be intriguing to witness Tommy navigating around his unpredictable nature, especially when it comes to handling a powerful figure like Galino.

Demi Moore’s Cami Remained Criminally Underused, Which Needs To Be Fixed For Season 2

It seems clear that Taylor Sheridan probably didn’t anticipate Demi Moore winning her first major acting award for The Substance at the time when Landman was airing during its initial season (2025 Golden Globe win). Consequently, he didn’t plan to leverage this success by expanding the role of Cami, who was somewhat underutilized in the large cast of Season 1.

In the television series “Landman,” Cami, portrayed as Jon Hamm’s wife and Monty Miller’s wealthy oil tycoon character, was present in over half of the episodes. However, her character did not have a main storyline of her own, and the finale didn’t bring significant changes in this regard. Despite the penultimate episode suggesting that Monty might have passed away, which could have resulted in a powerful emotional scene for Moore’s Cami in the final episode, things didn’t unfold as dramatically.

In the longer episode, Moore’s character predominantly appeared sad during discussions about distributing Monty’s will and wealth, potentially making everyone millionaires. Later, there was a poignant scene where Cami cried on Monty’s chest, with their daughters weeping beside them. The lifeless monitor suggested that Monty had indeed perished.

In simpler terms, it seems that Sheridan might not have planned much for Camy’s character beyond her being a loyal wife and friend to Tommy, and Moore may not have been prepared for anything excessively dramatic initially. However, given that Cami is as sought-after an actress as ever now, I can only wish that her role in Season 2 is substantial, like the heaviest cattle in Texas, maybe requiring some adjustments to the script before production resumes.

In summary, the finale did an acceptable job of establishing the upcoming events in this world, although it hasn’t been confirmed that Paramount+ will continue the series yet. Regrettably, we didn’t get to see Jacob Lofland’s Cooper more actively involved in the field, but he seems to be adopting a less strenuous role as a mediator for Tim DeZarn’s Perry Hardin and his neighbors. His relationship with Paulina Chavez’s Ariana Medina is progressing positively, though it’s moving at a slow pace due to her ongoing grief.
