‘Lanterns’: Aaron Pierre, Stephan James in the Mix to Play John Stewart in DC Studios, HBO Series

As a seasoned gamer with a keen eye for superhero lore and an unmatched enthusiasm for representation, I must say the casting news for HBO’s “Lanterns” has me positively thrilled! The prospect of Aaron Pierre and Stephan James potentially bringing John Stewart to life is nothing short of exhilarating.

DC Studios and HBO’s much-ballyhooed series Lanterns is hitting its final casting stages.

Aaron Pierre, renowned for his roles in Netflix’s thriller “Rebel Ridge” and the drama “The Piano Lesson,” is reportedly being considered for the role of beloved character John Stewart. According to various reports, Stephan James is also on the list of potential candidates for this part, as stated by The Hollywood Reporter.

It’s not certain whether the trio is engaging in a test or reading – reports indicate that a choice might be finalized by the end of the weekend.

According to reports, Damson Idris, who stars in FX’s “Snowfall,” has been removed from the list of potential candidates.

HBO and DC had no comment.

The series titled “Lanterns” has been given a direct-to-series order by HBO, and it boasts a team of esteemed creators behind it. Notably, Chris Mundy from “Ozark”, Damon Lindelof known for “Watchmen” and “Lost”, and the Eisner Award-winning comic book writer Tom King are serving as executive producers and writers. Mundy is also set to oversee the show’s production.

Kyle Chandler secured the part as iconic Green Lantern character Hal Jordan in the DC film series, as they were searching for a well-known actor to lead the production. Initially, Josh Brolin was presented with the role, but he chose not to accept it in the end.

Nonetheless, Chandler is a prominent figure in TV, having bagged an Emmy for NBC’s “Friday Night Lights” and receiving nominations for Netflix’s “Bloodline.” His extensive experience made him the perfect choice to work alongside a newcomer.

The narrative of Lanterns is often described as having a rough, atmospheric feel reminiscent of True Detective, and it centers around Hal Jordan who finds himself in the role of reluctant mentor to a younger Green Lantern, John Stewart.

Stewart plays a crucial role in DC Comics, being among their initial Black superheroes. He was first introduced by writer Dennis O’Neil and artist Neal Adams in Green Lantern #87 back in 1971, which was 12 years after Hal Jordan and the broader Green Lantern Corps lore emerged. This year, as he steps into live-action TV, John Stewart presents a significant casting chance for an upcoming Black actor, one of the most notable of this year.
