The musicians’ union that works on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert is voicing its opposition to the show’s termination.
In a statement made on Friday, Robert Suttmann, president of Local 802 American Federation of Musicians, expressed deep concern over the unexpected termination of the show, which Colbert announced on July 17. The reason for his worry is not just about the jobs lost by the musicians in the show’s band, but also the potential impact on freedom of expression at large.
For many years, live music has played a crucial role in late-night TV shows, providing a significant stage for musicians to connect with their audience, display their talent, and contribute to cultural discussions. The potential cancellation of Colbert’s show could not only jeopardize the careers of the skilled musicians who perform there but also challenge the basic tenets of free speech and artistic expression that are essential values in our industry and country,” stated Suttman.
CBS announced that the cancellation was solely due to financial reasons, considering the dwindling market for linear TV. However, it’s important to note that Stephen Colbert had recently expressed criticism towards Paramount (CBS’s parent company) and their handling of a lawsuit filed by Donald Trump concerning a 60 Minutes interview with Kamala Harris.
Suttman additionally encouraged fellow broadcasters to take a firm stance against President Donald Trump, who tweeted that late-night hosts Jimmy Kimmel and Jimmy Fallon might soon lose their jobs. He further stated that the union would support its affected members in this situation.
It’s crucial to address the truth of the situation: The President of the United States has expressed his belief that he may have influenced a decision, and he’s threatened NBC and ABC over their late-night hosts. Given this, it’s essential for NBC and ABC to declare boldly that they won’t be silenced like this. Now, more than ever, we require courage, not timidity.
The decision made by CBS involves more than just a late-night chat show. When a government tries to muffle criticism and opposition by exerting its authority, it’s crucial that we pay attention. If censorship is employed to suppress free speech, then we should unite in resistance. What’s happening currently isn’t merely wrong; it contradicts the values we as a nation should uphold.
