Laurence Fishburne recently reminisced about a memorable event during the shooting of “Apocalypse Now” in 1979, an experience that reportedly left director Francis Ford Coppola feeling unsatisfied.
In Apple TV+’s latest documentary, Number One on the Call Sheet: Black Leading Men in Hollywood, the actor admitted that his limited sexual experiences during his teenage years influenced a particular scene from the American epic war movie he starred in.
The actor from The Matrix, speaking about it, mentioned a deleted scene from Apocalypse Now that was later added in the remastered version. At that time, he was around 14 or 15 years old and found himself struggling to perform a scene involving discussions about sex as he had no prior sexual encounters.
Fishburne went on to explain that the Academy Award-winning director struggled to make him seem more seasoned, yet persistently requested his participation repeatedly. He estimated performing approximately 40 takes. It was quite challenging, and I could sense his dissatisfaction. As a result, I felt incredibly disheartened and downcast.
Even though I was struggling during that difficult time, the former star of Black-ish recalled some inspiring words that Martin Sheen, from Apocalypse Now, had shared with me. He said these words “saved my life.
Martin seemed to murmur something into my ear, and he asked, ‘Has anyone ever told you that you’re an exceptional actor?'” Fishburne replied, “No.” To which Martin responded, “You’re an excellent actor.
The actor added of Sheen, “That’s what being No. 1 on a call sheet is about for me.”
The movie “Apocalypse Now,” winner of two Oscars, narrates the story of an American army officer deployed in Vietnam, who is given the mission to eliminate a rogue Special Forces colonel, rumored to have lost his sanity.
Despite the incident not being one of Fishburne’s favorite experiences from his initial film role, it didn’t seem to strain his working relationship with Coppola. They have collaborated on multiple projects over the years, including Rumble Fish, The Cotton Club, Gardens of Stone, and more recently, Megalopolis.
The Hollywood Reporter has reached out to Coppola’s rep for comment.
