Laurence Fishburne Says ‘The Matrix’ Team “Didn’t Respond Well” to Him Offering to Appear in the 2021 Sequel

As a dedicated Matrix fan, I’d have loved to step back into the world for the fourth installment, just like Morpheus re-entering the matrix, but it seemed the creators and I weren’t quite seeing eye-to-eye on the vision for this next chapter.

During an interview on ‘The View’ on Thursday, Morpheus (Laurence Fishburne) stated that he proposed his assistance for the fourth Matrix movie, but they weren’t receptive to this suggestion. He clarified that he had indeed expressed his desire to participate.

When asked if he might join the franchise’s fifth film, the Academy Award nominee didn’t rule out appearing in the sequel completely, but he mentioned that his involvement would hinge on the specific conditions related to who would be working on the movie.

His participation hinges on who is involved and the quality of the script, he explained to the hosts. Furthermore, he mentioned that his involvement might occur if they extend an invitation to him, following his previous request to join The Matrix Resurrections, which was declined several years ago.

He mentioned that for some unknown reason, his part in the 2021 sequel didn’t materialize, and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II was chosen instead to portray a new version of Morpheus, a character first played by Fishburne in the groundbreaking 1999 film directed by the Wachowskis.

Following his appearances in the initial three Matrix movies, Fishburne revealed in a 2020 interview with New York Magazine that he wasn’t asked to reprise his character for the fourth film. Later on, Abdul-Mateen II took over the role, but snippets of Fishburne as Morpheus were included in the final movie.

Significantly, Keanu Reeves appeared in every one of the four Matrix movies. The Wachowski siblings were responsible for directing the first three Matrix films, but it was only Lana Wachowski who helmed The Matrix Resurrections.

Fishburne confirmed that he wasn’t chosen for The Matrix Resurrections, but left open a possibility for the future of his involvement in the series, saying simply, ‘I guess we’ll find out.’
