Laverne Cox Reunites With Estranged Father as a Trans Woman in Trailer for Norman Lear-Produced ‘Clean Slate’

One of producer Norman Lear’s final projects will be released on Prime Video next month.

Fresh Start, featuring Laverne Cox and George Wallace, narrates the journey of a father and daughter mending their long-estranged bond. Wallace portrays Harry, a traditional, blunt southern car wash proprietor, who finds himself needing to adjust his perspectives on pronouns when his transgender son, Desiree (Cox), unexpectedly arrives at his Mobile, Alabama home.

Initially, I thought my brief sojourn in New York City would be just that – short. But fate had other plans when the art gallery I managed faced funding cuts, leading me to move in with my father. The relationship with Harry wasn’t the only knotty situation I found myself untangling; my presence at the church stirred some hushed gossip and caused a rift between me and my best friend Louis, who was the choir director and hiding his true identity. A new romantic entanglement emerged as well when Mack, Harry’s right-hand man at the car wash, took an instant liking to me, much like his daughter Opal did, who aspired to follow in my footsteps and chase her big city dreams one day.

Harry also starts entertaining the notion of forming a romantic bond as he and Ella (played by Telma Hopkins), Louis’ mother, start drawing closer. Meanwhile, Harry and his neighbor Miguel (Philip Garcia) maintain their rivalry, hinting at a potential lifelong enmity.

Clean Slate was formed by Cox, Wallace, Dan Ewen (from Dear Santa), who act as executive producers alongside Lear, who passed away on December 5, 2023 at the age of 101, and Brent Miller, head of production and development for Lear’s ACT III Productions. Alongside Ewen, Simran Baidwan co-manages the comedy series as an executive producer.

All eight episodes of Clean Slate release on Prime Video Feb. 5.
