As a long-time fan of the Law & Order universe, I must say that the latest news about Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio joining Law & Order: Organized Crime has me absolutely thrilled! It feels like coming full circle to see an actor who was part of Criminal Intent now gracing the screens of Organized Crime.
In a shift from its previous four seasons which aired on NBC alongside Law & Order: SVU on Thursday nights, Season 5 of Law & Order: Organized Crime is now set to stream on Peacock. However, this isn’t the only change – the series has also elevated a Season 4 actor to a regular role and has brought on board an alum from Law & Order: Criminal Intent, Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio, for several episodes of the upcoming season. Get ready, fans, as she joins the drama with ties to Stabler himself!
Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio previously starred as Captain Zoe Callas in the ninth season of “Criminal Intent.” Contrary to expectations, she won’t be reprising this role for “Organized Crime,” according to Deadline. Instead, the actress is set to appear recurringly in Season 5, portraying Isabella Spezzano, a character connected to Stabler’s past. Notably, Mastrantonio isn’t the first actor in the “Law & Order” series to play multiple characters, as this number surpasses ten.
The announcement of Mastrantonio joining the cast didn’t reveal any information about her character’s connection to Stabler, who will again be portrayed by Christopher Meloni. It appears that her role might not be one of the Stabler sisters, as their presence has been absent despite Elliot’s brothers appearing in Season 4. Instead, it’s possible that Isabella Spezzano is someone from Stabler’s past with NYPD, perhaps a woman he encountered during his time in Italy. This wouldn’t be the first enigmatic female character tied to Stabler’s days in Rome; Tia’s appearance in Season 3 added complexity to Elliot’s storyline.
Given Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio’s return for Season 5, it appears plausible that she’ll play a significant role in the unfolding storyline. It remains unclear whether she will align herself with the heroes or the villains, but her presence raises questions about how rapidly the show will address the cliffhanger involving Joe Jr., who was taken by crime boss Emery at the end of its NBC run in the spring.
As of now, it hasn’t been decided whether Michael Trotter will return as Joey in Season 5. While he has praised the show and Christopher Meloni this year, there’s still a lot of uncertainty surrounding his potential return. Apart from Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio taking on a new role, not much is clear about her character. Will her character be connected to a continuous storyline in Season 5? If so, will she align with Elliot or the villains? How deeply does her character relate to Elliot’s past? It’s also unclear if she’ll be introduced as part of a new story arc or possibly tied to Joe Jr.’s plotline should it continue into Season 5.
Mastrantonio is joining “Organized Crime” after its transition from NBC to streaming on Peacock Premium. Similarly, she joined “Criminal Intent” when it moved from NBC to USA. Currently, you can stream both “Criminal Intent” and the first four seasons of “Organized Crime” on the NBCUniversal platform. It’s unclear if the fifth season of “Organized Crime” will air in time for the 2024 TV schedule, but filming has reportedly started.
