As a gamer who’s spent countless hours dissecting courtroom drama scenes in various video games, I must say that “Fractured” was a breath of fresh air for Law & Order: SVU. The episode had all the right ingredients – suspense, tension, and a pinch of justice served.
Spoilers ahead for the Season 26 premiere of Law & Order: SVU Season 26, called “Fractured.”
In the fall 2024 TV lineup, Law & Order: SVU made its comeback, bringing a new cast member on board who’s filling the void left by Rollins. Benson has been trying to fill this gap for some time now, and this latest addition seems fitting, but I didn’t find her particularly outstanding in her debut episode. In the recent episode “Fractured,” it was Carisi who truly stole the show, delivering an impressive performance that I plan to rewatch using my Peacock subscription, specifically to appreciate Peter Scanavino’s courtroom antics during the trial of the week.
Law & Order: SVU’s Newest Detective
It was announced during the summer that Kevin Kane, previously a recurring actor on the show, would be upgraded to series regular for Season 26 as character Bruno. Notably, Juliana Aidén Martinez from “Griselda” was also cast as the latest addition to Benson’s squad, portraying Detective Kate Silva in the upcoming season.
Previously, Silva’s father held the position of a police officer and was later promoted to deputy commissioner. Notably, the long-serving Special Victims Unit captain, Benson, holds Silva’s father in much higher regard than she did Chief McGrath, as evidenced by his dismissal.
After the debut of Season 26, Silva comes across as both confident and proficient. Interestingly, Martinez shares screen time with Mariska Hargitay, Ice-T, Peter Scanavino, Octavio Pisano, and Kevin Kane in the opening credits, whereas Aimé Donna Kelly (Captain Curry) and Jordana Spiro (Agent Sykes) were absent by the end of Season 25 earlier this year. This suggests that Silva might be a permanent addition to the cast, although she didn’t steal the limelight in the premiere.
Carisi Was The MVP
This week’s case centered around a vicious assault on a trio of law students who were seen together on camera. Regrettably, two of them lost their lives, while the third suffered an attack. Benson and Co. managed to identify the perpetrator, but it fell upon Carisi to persuade him to incriminate himself in court.
It appears I haven’t watched a recent episode of SVU, but in “Fractured,” Carisi seemed exceptionally sharp in court as he systematically dismantled the defendant’s lies by targeting his ego, causing him to crack under pressure on the stand. Although the episode didn’t conclusively show a guilty verdict or sentencing, it was evident that Carisi had successfully closed the case.
It’s always entertaining when Carisi taps into his Tom Cruise-like persona from A Few Good Men, though the law student he was questioning wasn’t quite like Jack Nicholson. In summary, “Fractured” kicked off the legal side of Law & Order: SVU in a very impressive way.
Stay tuned to NBC every Thursday at 9 p.m. Eastern Time for the latest episodes of Law & Order: SVU, Season 26. This season promises some exciting developments for the character of Rollisi, as Kelli Giddish is set to appear frequently in a storyline that not only offers a more fitting resolution for Rollins’ departure from the series but also sets the stage for more interactions between Rollins and Carisi.
Apart from the current season, you can also catch up on past seasons of SVU on Peacock. This season, Found replaces Law & Order: Organized Crime as the show that follows new episodes.
