‘Law & Order’ and ‘SVU’ Renewed at NBC

The iconic, longest-running prime-time drama in American television will keep extending its record. Meanwhile, the show that originally aired before it and is the second longest-running drama series ever, is preparing for a comeback as well.

The television network NBC has decided to continue airing “Law & Order: SVU” and “Law & Order” during the 2025-26 TV season. With this renewal, “SVU” will start its 27th season in autumn, while the original series “L&O” will commence its 25th season. By the end of this season, these two shows will have amassed a combined total of 1,096 episodes.

The revivals of the “Law & Order” shows are happening in the wake of NBC renewing all three of its “Chicago” series. These renewals guarantee that both franchises, produced by Dick Wolf’s Wolf Entertainment and Universal TV, will stay together on NBC for the upcoming season. With NBC likely decreasing its scripted programming to accommodate primetime NBA broadcasts, these shows will continue to air. (The current third “Law & Order” series, titled “Organized Crime,” is streaming on Peacock and has already completed half of its fifth season.)

Both series, SVU and Law & Order, continue to be popular draws for NBC, attracting approximately 5.9 million and 5.2 million viewers respectively in Nielsen’s seven-day linear ratings. However, they draw significantly more viewers on streaming platforms. NBC reports that streaming of Law & Order on Peacock has more than doubled this season compared to the 2023-24 season (without providing specific numbers). SVU ranks 21st among all network shows in Nielsen’s 35-day, all-platform viewership for the season with a total of 8.7 million viewers. NBC states that a total of 44 million people have watched at least a bit of either show this season.

Excitedly speaking about the upcoming season of SVU, I’m thrilled to share that one of its beloved alums, Michele Fazekas, who contributed as a writer and producer from 2001-06, is set to step into the role of showrunner! Currently, the executive producers are Dick Wolf, David Graziano, Julie Martin, our series lead Mariska Hargitay, Norberto Barba, Kenneth Brown, and Peter Jankowski. The continuity and quality of the show under their guidance has been exceptional, and I can’t wait to see what Michele brings to the table next season!

As a passionate fan, I can’t wait for Season 24 of Law & Order, which I understand is being expertly crafted by the talented team led by Dick Wolf, joined by Rick Eid, Pamela Wechsler, Alex Hall, and Jankowski.
