Leaked Superman Toys Don’t Spoil the Film According to James Gunn

Leaked Superman Toys Don't Spoil the Film According to James Gunn

As a film enthusiast with over three decades of comic book-inspired cinematic experiences under my belt, I find myself intrigued by James Gunn‘s reimagining of Superman. The latest revelations about Ultraman and Lex Luxor have certainly piqued my curiosity, and I can’t help but feel like a kid on Christmas Eve, eagerly awaiting the trailer’s release.

James Gunn recently spoke up regarding leaked toys related to the upcoming Superman film, stating that they do not actually reveal any significant plot details, despite exposing the identity of one of the movie’s antagonists. The movie, featuring David Corenswet as Clark Kent, will serve as the launchpad for a fresh DC cinematic universe and introduce a variety of well-known comic book characters. Among these new additions is an adversary that diehard fans will quickly recognize, as hinted by the leaked toys that could potentially contain spoilers.

Over the weekend, a listing for a Superman toy surfaced online, sparking excitement among fans who discovered that Ultraman, an alternate version of Superman from the comics, appears in the movie. This revelation aligns with sightings of a masked stuntperson portraying a mysterious character bearing a large ‘U’ symbol engaging in combat with the Kryptonian hero on set. However, despite the apparent spoiler, director Gunn took to social media to debunk any speculations that the toy leak gives away the movie’s plot. In fact, he shared that such toys must receive his approval before they are made public.

It seems there might be some confusion, as I’m unsure about the topic at hand. However, I need to approve all the toys. Rest assured, none of these toys will spoil anything.

It should be kept in mind that it seems the movie version of Ultraman will be different from the comics, as teased by a completely unfamiliar outfit seen on set. Some fans speculate that he is instead a lesser clone of Superman created by Lex Luthor (Nicholas Hoult), who Gunn insists is the true villain of the film. The aforementioned toy listing also included “Lex Luxor with Baby Kaiju,” so perhaps there is an even greater mystery at play here. After introducing Starro in The Suicide Squad, it seems Gunn simply loves putting kaiju on the big screen, and we can’t blame him.

A trailer for Superman hasn’t been released yet, but it’s anticipated that it will come out before the year ends. Director James Gunn has hinted multiple times that fans would be seeing the first glimpse of Superman sooner rather than later. However, it’s uncertain if the trailer will coincide with a film release this year. The last significant event of 2024, CCXP held in Brazil from December 5 to 8, might be when we get our first peek at Gunn’s Superman. So, there’s a chance that Corenswet could make his appearance as the Kryptonian hero during this event.

Besides Corey Swiet as Superman, the movie also showcases Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Isabela Merced as Hawgirl, Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific, and a host of other DC characters in what seems like an action-packed solo film. The primary antagonists facing Superman appear to be the Authority, a group who are set to star in their own film within the DC Universe at some point. From toy leaks, we know Ultraman is expected to join this team of villains and anti-heroes. While this is largely speculation, all indications from set images and leaks suggest that Luthor isn’t the only adversary causing trouble for Superman in the reboot. It remains uncertain who will play Ultraman; some fans even propose Corey Swiet might take on two roles on screen.
