Lee Child, the author of the Reacher series, recently expressed his frustration with Season 3 of the show, but it’s not due to the typical reasons one might assume. Child introduced Jack Reacher in the 1997 novel “Killing Floor” and has since written 28 more books in the series, with another book set for release later this year. After two movies featuring Tom Cruise, the Prime Video series debuted in 2022 and has received widespread acclaim from both viewers and critics.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Child openly shared his thoughts about Reacher Season 3, based on the seventh novel in the series titled “Persuader.” The newest season will debut on February 20th and has already earned a Certified Fresh rating of 97% from critics on Rotten Tomatoes. Moreover, it boasts a 76% approval rating from fans according to its Popcornmeter. Child expresses his frustration because he feels that creator Nick Santora has outdone the mental image he had while writing the book.
I find it frustrating when others surpass my efforts. What they’ve managed to accomplish is quite remarkable because it seems complete, with no obvious gaps or missing parts. The flow might be different due to compressions and alterations, but overall, most of it is excellent, and in some cases, even superior to my original work. This speaks volumes about the talent of [showrunner] Nick Santora and the writing room.
In Season 3 of “Reacher”, Alan Ritchson reprises his role as the title character Reacher, a drifter who encounters trouble when he attempts to save an undercover DEA informant from a dangerous criminal network. Returning alongside him is Maria Sten as Frances Neagley, his reliable associate. The duo are joined by new faces including Anthony Michael Hall, Oliver Richters, Brian Tee, and Sonya Cassidy in their mission.
Lee Child Calls Maria Sten the “Surprise Star” of ‘Reacher’
Readers of Child’s books recognize that Reacher always strategizes his actions mentally before confronting villains. The action is quick in thought rather than physically, making it a bit challenging for screen adaptation. As he explained, “It can’t be done on the screen – you can’t have Reacher sitting there for long periods contemplating, as that’s terrible television.” Indeed, he isn’t exaggerating, which makes Neagley’s character so crucial in the series, as she helps visualize Reacher’s thoughts for viewers. Child even went as far as to call her the “unexpected standout” of the show, a prediction that doesn’t surprise fans given that she will have her own spinoff.
In my perspective, I yearn for a confidant, someone I deeply know and can rely on, who can mirror my thoughts through our interactions. Alan, undeniably, is remarkable, but what truly delights me is the exceptional quality that she possesses. To my astonishment, Maria Sten has emerged as the unexpected standout in this production for me.
Here are the episodes from Season 3 of Reacher currently streaming on Prime Video. Additional episodes will be released weekly, with the final one airing on March 27. In October 2025, keep an eye out for Lee Child’s next book in the series, titled Exit Strategy, which will be available at bookstores then.
