81-year-old South Korean actress Lee Joo-sil, renowned in the U.S. for her roles in series like “Squid Game” and “Train to Busan”, has sadly passed away after a three-month fight against stomach cancer. Her acting career, which began at 20, was marked by numerous acclaimed performances.
On February 2nd, it was reported by Lee’s agency that she suffered a cardiac arrest and was rushed to St. Mary’s Hospital in Uijeongbu, Gyeonggi. Regrettably, the actress passed away just a few hours later. She had been fighting against stomach cancer for almost three months, which marked her second bout with this life-threatening illness. Lee had previously been diagnosed with breast cancer several decades ago as well. A memorial hall commemorating Lee’s work and legacy has been established at Severance Hospital in Sinchon, western Seoul, while the official funeral procession for Lee is scheduled to take place on Wednesday.
As someone who cherishes the magic that movies bring, I must share my admiration for the indomitable spirit of a remarkable actress who fought illness but never let it dampen her love for acting. Most recently, she graced our screens in the sensational second season of ‘Squid Game’, portraying the mother of the undercover detective Hwang Joon-ho, played by Wi Ha Joon. It remains uncertain if her character will reappear in the third and final season of this gripping survival series, which was filmed before her passing. If she does return, the June release of ‘Squid Game’ season three will serve as a poignant farewell to her captivating on-screen presence.
Remembering Lee Joo-Sil’s Niche as the Quintessential “Mom” of South Korean Media
Over the span of her illustrious career, I’ve had the pleasure of witnessing Lee in numerous roles, yet it’s her portrayal of warm-hearted mothers and grandmothers that truly resonated with me. Starting as a stage actress at the tender age of 20 in 1965, she graced over 200 productions, including timeless classics like “Death of a Salesman” and “Macbeth.” However, it was during the 80s and 90s that Lee truly captured my heart by transitioning to on-screen acting.
For over two decades, she played the iconic role of Mrs. Kim, or mother to Kim Hye-suk, in the South Korean series “Jeonwonilgi.” This long-running role solidified her acting niche as the beloved “mom” figure in the hearts of many viewers. Following this, she continued to shine on television with roles in shows like “The Uncanny Encounter” (2020-2023) and “Heaven’s Garden” (2011-2012). However, she also expanded her career into films, appearing in productions such as “Roaring Currents” in 2014 and the emotional drama “Train to Busan” in 2016.
As a dedicated movie critic, allow me to express my heartfelt sentiments about the indelible impact of actress Lee in the realm of South Korean television and cinema. Her absence will indeed leave a void, yet her enduring legacy, spanning countless productions, remains unquestionably profound.
Reminiscing on one particular occasion when I first laid eyes on her in a KDrama, it was as if destiny had led me to an extraordinary piece of artistry. In that very instant, I knew that this would be no ordinary production; the moment I beheld her face, I was captivated by its allure and charm.
Her infectious smile, a beacon of warmth and joy, served as a testament to the depth and sincerity she brought to each role she embodied. It’s no wonder that fans like myself were instantly drawn in, eagerly awaiting her next appearance on our screens.
