Sadly, the renowned author, comic book designer, and notable figure behind the Incredible Hulk, has lost his life at the age of 68.
According to a Facebook post shared by his wife Kathleen O’Shea David, it was confirmed that Peter David passed away on the night of May 24th. Kathleen wrote, “I have to share this news. Peter David has passed away last night. We are heartbroken. I will write more when I can,” she said. Peter David leaves behind his wife and their four children, Caroline Helen David, Shana David, Ariel David, and Guinevere David.
Peter David commenced his career in the comic book industry following a successful stint as a journalist and author. After spending several years in Marvel Comics’ Sales Department, he eventually moved into their editorial offices. Notable among his extensive body of work is his celebrated tenure on ‘The Incredible Hulk’, where he delved deeply into the complex personalities of the title character.
This run by David significantly marked one of, if not the most lasting periods in the hero’s comic book lore, shaping a contemporary understanding of the main character. This notable work earned David and artist Dale Keown an Eisner Award in 1992. Among David’s other honors are the 1993 Wizard Fan Award, UK Comic Art Award, 2007 Julie Award for cross-genre achievements, and the 2011 GLAAD Media Award for Outstanding Comic Book for his work on X-Factor Volume 3.
Originally in March, a fundraiser was initiated on behalf of Kathleen O’Shea David and to aid Peter himself. As Murphy expressed then, “Hello friends! I am restarting a campaign for Peter David and his family. Despite the ongoing challenges with Peter’s health issues, he has been recovering for three years now! Although he faces kidney disease, minor surgeries, and recent small strokes, he continues to progress. Unfortunately, Medicaid, which had managed his Long Term Disability, has recently let him go. This means that the medical bills and living expenses are piling up at an uncontrollable rate… I have known Peter and his family for many years, and they are some of the kindest, most generous people you will ever come across. Let’s show our appreciation for their kindness and generosity by helping them during this difficult time.
The fundraiser ultimately raised over $116,000, though it fell short of its intended $150,000 goal.
