LEGO ‘Superman’ Trailer Shared by Director James Gunn

As a lifelong cinema enthusiast who has witnessed the rise and fall of numerous superhero franchises, I must say that James Gunn‘s upcoming Superman reboot has truly piqued my interest. The trailer, with its blocky LEGO recreation, harkens back to my childhood memories of the iconic LEGO Batman Movie, reminding me that even a hero as timeless as Superman can still find new and innovative ways to entertain us.

Earlier this month, James Gunn’s Superman trailer was met with widespread praise, shattering viewership records during its initial week of release. The sneak peek showcased David Corenswet as the iconic Kryptonian hero, while also introducing a variety of DC characters for the first time in live-action. Due to the overwhelming interest in this upcoming film, it has been reimagined in a unique way – the Superman trailer is now available in LEGO form. Why not, right?

During the recent holiday break, YouTube personality and 3D artist Trevor Carlee posted a LEGO rendition of the Superman trailer. This creation faithfully replicates the original edited live-action footage, making Gunn’s film feel like a spiritual sequel to the cherished LEGO Batman Movie. While it’s not unusual for fans to create blocky versions of popular trailers, seeing Superman in this format is still thrilling. On Christmas day, Gunn himself shared the LEGO trailer on his social media, hinting, “We’re working on your gift. It will be ready in July.” Clearly, we can’t wait for summer 2025 to arrive.

Instead of “Joker: Folie à Deux” being transformed into a LEGO version, and “Deadpool & Wolverine’s” epic fight being reimagined in the same style, fans are thrilled to see their beloved superhero franchises depicted as blocky figures. A young animator was hired for “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” to create a LEGO sequence within the movie itself. Since Universal Pictures now controls the rights to the LEGO brand in movies, it’s unlikely we’ll see full-fledged DC or Marvel LEGO films. As a result, fans have been continuing the legacy of “The LEGO Batman Movie,” and a new LEGO version of the “Superman” trailer is just one example among many.

‘Superman’ is Inspired By Previous Iterations of the Superhero

As a die-hard film fan, I eagerly anticipate the premiere of the DC Universe’s first step, Superman, which promises to usher in a fresh chapter for the superhero genre. This journey won’t be solo, as the forthcoming movie pays homage to the original incarnation of the character. The official trailer echoes John Williams’ timeless musical theme, reimagined on the guitar. Yet, that’s not the only Superman inspiration director James Gunn draws upon. In fact, he’s openly acknowledged the impact of various DC media on his Superman film, ranging from Richard Donner’s 1978 masterpiece to Man of Steel by Zack Snyder.

The various media from the DC universe have left an indelible mark on my work. While the original Donner film was certainly impactful, I’m not simply making a replica of it. Instead, it serves as a foundation, with my creation taking a very distinct path. Zack Snyder’s work has been inspiring too. Influences from the DC animated universe also play a significant role, and then there are elements from the comic books themselves, particularly All-Star Superman, that have had a profound impact on me.

While not explicitly stated, we can’t help but draw some inspiration from “The LEGO Batman Movie.” In a more formal context, it’s thrilling to know that Superman is a result of meticulous world-building over decades within the DC universe, be it live-action, animated, or otherwise. Despite enjoying the classic Superman theme, Gunn has also confirmed that the film will feature its own unique soundtrack, drawing inspiration from Williams’ work. Remarkably, the director has even shown interest in consulting with past Superman directors, including Snyder himself. If the revamped DC Universe is to thrive, Superman needs to soar high, and given the current circumstances, it appears to be in capable hands.
