LEGO recently unveiled a new set tied to the upcoming Marvel Studios’ “Fantastic Four” movie. Many enthusiasts may be eager to add it to their collections, but LEGO has raised some eyebrows with a questionable decision concerning one of Marvel’s original family members. Previously, LEGO made significant strides in its “Fantastic Four” product line, as the company showcased an early glimpse of Galactus’ design before Marvel Studios officially unveiled him to fans.
In the latest LEGO set based on “The Fantastic Four: First Steps”, The Thing has been designed as a standard minifigure, similar in size to the other members of the team. This might come as a surprise because usually larger characters get the Bigfig treatment, which makes them wider and taller than regular minifigures. For instance, figures like Hulk and Thanos were represented as Bigfigs.
I’m among those fans who can’t help but feel a tad disappointed that The Thing, such a significant character, has been transformed into a minifigure rather than a Bigfig. In a promotional shot, the Fantastic Four minifigures from the set seemed to be squaring off against Galactus, and it’s evident that The Thing doesn’t tower over his teammates as one might expect, given his stature in the comic books. However, he does sport larger hands, which, when combined with his miniature form, creates an image that feels somewhat disproportionate, adding to the sense of disappointment for many fans.
It’s important to note that the LEGO set’s depiction of The Thing’s head appears slightly out of proportion, which gives the impression that the overall minifigure design might not have received the attention it deserved.
It’s quite puzzling, considering LEGO has employed a larger design for The Thing previously.
In the LEGO Marvel Superheroes video game, The Thing stood out as significantly larger among the playable characters. Additionally, he appeared more balanced in terms of proportion, with his limbs and head being roughly similar in size to the rest of his figure.
In the LEGO Marvel Avengers: Mission Demolition once more, The Thing received an upgrade in his character’s appearance.
It’s important to mention that The Thing doesn’t seem to be as towering in “The Fantastic Four: First Steps” as he has been in previous appearances, yet he remains larger than his teammates, suggesting a distinct appearance compared to the other characters.
On July 25, 2025, the movie titled “The Fantastic Four: First Steps” is set to premiere. This film features Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Ebon Moss-Bachrach, Joseph Quinn, Julia Garner portraying a female Silver Surfer, and Ralph Ineson in its starring roles.
Will More Fantastic Four LEGO Sets Come Out?
If you’re dissatisfied with the design of The Thing in LEGO’s newest Fantastic Four collection, there’s no reason to worry just yet. It’s possible that this set is not the only one we’ll see from the movie, and if fans aren’t happy with the current design for The Thing, LEGO may choose to make adjustments in future releases.
Supporters have already expressed their opinions about The Thing’s appearance. LEGO might consider alterations to release The Thing as a larger figure (Bigfig) in a future kit. However, even simply making the minifigure more proportionate would bring about some improvement, too.
It’s important to mention that The Thing isn’t the sole character from this group whose appearance received some criticism; fans also expressed their opinions about Reed Richards’ minifigure, primarily due to its unusual design.
Following the theater release of The Fantastic Four, it’s probable that additional series might be unveiled. If the movie achieves success, there could potentially be numerous follow-ups within months or years.
In the coming phases of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), it’s likely that the Fantastic Four will take center stage, opening up numerous opportunities for The Thing to be recreated as a LEGO figure. This could happen in a new set dedicated to The Fantastic Four, or possibly in a set tied to another upcoming movie.
