Lewis Hamilton Has A Major Hand In Brad Pitt's New F1 Movie: 'It Really Starts With Lewis'

As a huge fan of Formula One and a lover of cinematic masterpieces that bring real-life experiences to the big screen, I couldn’t contain my excitement after learning about “F1,” the upcoming movie led by Brad Pitt. The collaboration between director Joseph Kosinski and Lewis Hamilton, a seven-time World Champion in Formula One, is a game-changer for this project.

In an astonishing follow-up to “Top Gun: Maverick,” director Joseph Kosinski is working on a new project titled “F1” that promises to be just as captivating. This film, featuring Brad Pitt in the lead role, tells the story of a former Formula One driver who makes a comeback after years of absence. To ensure authenticity, the production team closely partnered with Formula One and its teams. Moreover, Kosinski sought the advice of Lewis Hamilton, a renowned Formula One racer, whose input was reportedly crucial to the film’s creation.

Lewis Hamilton, recognized as Formula One’s finest driver with over a hundred victories to his name, has made headlines beyond the race track. He not only contributes as a producer in F1 and makes appearances as himself in the movie, but also plays a pivotal role in the creation of an anticipated film on the 2025 cinema slate. In an interview, director Joseph Kosinski discussed the efforts to bring Hamilton into the project:

Three years ago, he was the first individual I reached out to. To ensure an authentic production, having a team member who deeply experiences it every day is indispensable. Lewis has proven to be an exceptional collaborator; he joins me for Zoom sessions amidst his races, meticulously going over the script, turn by turn, tire compound by tire compound, to guarantee all the finer details are accurate. Moreover, on a creative and narrative aspect, he contributes significantly as well.

Formula One fans are in for a treat with Lewis Hamilton’s involvement in this project, providing an intricate and authentic perspective into the driving realm. This collaboration may have been a long time coming, as Hamilton was once offered a role in “Top Gun: Maverick” back in 2015. Although he declined due to feeling unprepared for acting and lacking the necessary time for training, he maintained a close friendship with Tom Cruise. So instead, director Joseph Kosinski and Hamilton joined forces to create an impressive racing production.

In a recent interview with Deadline, Jerry Bruckheimer, a producer from the Maverick team, discussed his excitement about working on the forthcoming film in collaboration with Formula One. He spoke highly of the 39-year-old English racing consultant they have been consulting, expressing great admiration for their contributions to the project.

The journey began with Lewis. Following Lewis, we moved on to Mercedes, and from there, we acquired the car. With the right perspective, it’s not as challenging as it seems. Subsequently, we visited Stefano (Domenicali, Formula One Group CEO) and Mohammed Ben Sulayem (FIA President). We held discussions with the principals of each team and had conversations with all the drivers to inform them about our plans. We interacted with almost everyone in Formula 1.

I’m a big fan of the making of “F1” and I can tell you from my perspective, this film was closely collaborated on with Formula One. Joseph Kosinski shared an interesting insight during production, stating that we, the team behind the scenes, were essentially the eleventh team. Brad Pitt and Damson Idris dedicated three months to preparing for their roles, which involved extensive training in driving cars. They started with Formula Three and eventually moved up to Formula Two. Lewis Hamilton, a renowned figure in the racing world, was quite impressed by their dedication and skills, labeling them “natural athletes” that left him genuinely impressed. Take a look at the first trailer for “F1” below:

In an engaging retelling:

Thus far, the glimpses of F1 have been nothing short of astonishing. With Joseph Kosinski and Jerry Bruckheimer’s perspectives added to the mix, it seems Lewis Hamilton’s input significantly enhanced the film’s creation. The anticipation builds as we eagerly await the completed project, set for release on June 27, 2025.
