Liam Hemsworth Breaks His Silence on Replacing Henry Cavill in The Witcher

As a lifelong fan of The Witcher franchise, I must admit that when the news broke about Liam Hemsworth stepping into Henry Cavill’s iconic boots as Geralt, my initial reaction was skepticism. However, upon hearing his passion for the role and seeing his dedication to immerse himself in the world of The Continent, I can’t help but feel optimistic.

Prior to his first appearance in the fourth season of Netflix’s fantasy series, replacing Henry Cavill as Geralt, the actor has already been evaluated by numerous fans. Yet, he remains enthusiastic about stepping into this role. He recently shared his initial response when the streaming service approached him after Cavill’s departure was announced.

On Live with Kelly & Mark, Hemsworth shared his enthusiasm about playing Geralt, a role he’s eager to tackle given his longtime admiration for the video game series. Although he wasn’t as familiar with the novels as his predecessor, Hemsworth made it a point to immerse himself in the books and the TV show, treating this new knowledge as homework. In his own words:

I haven’t watched the TV series nor read the books, but I did play the video game about a decade ago. Even so, it remains one of the greatest games ever made in my opinion. Approximately two years ago, Netflix approached me with an offer to assume the character role, which I was thrilled about because I was already a fan of the game. However, before accepting, I decided to watch the TV show and read the books to fully immerse myself.

He added a little insight into the long filming process, which he explained has taken up much of his year. He continued:

For the last nine months, I’ve been working on a series titled “The Witcher.” Recently, we spent two weeks in Wales. The initial week there was absolutely stunning, with clear skies and plenty of sunshine. However, the following week seemed to experience something similar to tornado season.

After the announcement that Cavill would no longer be part of The Witcher series following Season 3, both the main series and the spinoff Blood Origin have faced a chilly reception. This backlash can be seen in fan reviews bombarding Cavill’s final season with one-star ratings, as well as negative comments towards the spinoff. Many of these reviews specifically mention that they are giving low scores because Cavill was allegedly “forced” to leave the series due to creative disagreements regarding certain storylines within the show, causing dissatisfaction among viewers.

Much like Hemsworth’s social media interactions have drawn criticism from online trolls who continuously comment “Not my Witcher” and “Can’t replace Henry,” the actor appears unfazed by the negativity. In fact, he has garnered backing from his fellow cast members, with Freya Allen, who portrays Ciri in the series, being one of his supporters. Earlier this year, Allen publicly expressed her views on how Hemsworth was receiving treatment from the fanbase. She stated:

I genuinely empathize with him due to two reasons: firstly, his new fan base can be quite critical, which isn’t an easy environment to take on someone else’s role. Secondly, I’m eager to witness his performance. He’s a delightful individual, and I simply wish that people would afford him the opportunity to prove himself.

The fourth season of “The Witcher” has yet to announce an official launch date, but it’s projected to premiere around the year 2025. In the meantime, you can catch up on the earlier seasons of this series, as well as its related spinoffs, all available for streaming on Netflix.
