Liam Neeson’s ‘The Naked Gun’ Reboot Promises Laughs and Surprises

Sequels based on established classics can be a delicate endeavor. A successful revival can rekindle fans’ affection for a classic movie or show. However, if it falls short of expectations, it could potentially harm the esteem of a cherished original. The complexity is heightened when an entirely new cast and crew are involved, as in the case of the upcoming remake of The Naked Gun. In this instance, Liam Neeson steps into the role of the son of the original character played by Leslie Nielsen, with the sequel set to premiere in August.

The idea for a fourth “Naked Gun” film was initially proposed in 2009, but faced several years of setbacks and revisions before being officially approved in 2022. Known for their popularity in the comedy parody genre, the original “Naked Gun” trilogy has a dedicated fanbase. Given that this new installment will be made without the original cast and creative team, it’s a risky move. However, following the release of a teaser, many fans’ concerns seem to have been alleviated. In other words, it appears that the production of the new “Naked Gun” movie is in capable hands, and there’s no need to worry unduly at this point.

The Legacy of ‘The Naked Gun’

It’s possible that some viewers might be unaware that the “Naked Gun” movie series was originally a television show called “Police Squad!“. The character of bumbling police sergeant Frank Drebin, played by Leslie Nielsen, first appeared in this 1982 TV series, which was short-lived. This show paved the way for the distinctive physical comedy with puns that would become a staple of the trilogy. The dialogue is filled with countless puns, figures of speech are taken literally, and there are so many visual jokes that you may need to watch multiple times to catch them all.

In addition to Nielsen, the cast consisted of George Kennedy, Ricardo Montalban, Priscilla Presley, and OJ Simpson – yes, the football player famous for his acting skills and not much else beyond that. The trio of writers/directors, Zucker, Abrahams, and Zucker, were also part of it; they’re known for their hilarious films like “Airplane!” and “Top Secret!”. However, the original crew is not associated with the remake, and tensions between them and the new team are said to be strained.

Parody films aren’t generally considered top-tier cinema, often appearing on lists of the worst movies ever made. However, “The Naked Gun” stands tall among its peers as a shining example of how to do parody effectively. Given the apprehension surrounding this upcoming sequel, since none of the original creators are involved, it’s understandable that fans might feel uneasy. The comedy landscape has evolved drastically since the late ’80s and early ’90s. It’s been a while since we’ve seen a successful comedic parody film. Yet, parody remains an enduring genre if done correctly – by poking fun at relevant targets while infusing it with a fresh, humorous twist.

The Naked Gun’ Reboot Looks Promising

From a one-minute preview, we have a sense of what’s coming up with the latest release. Things seem promising. Liam Neeson portrays Lt. Frank Drebin Jr., the son of the original star, Leslie Nielsen. By the way, it’d be a missed opportunity if there wasn’t a play on words considering how similar these two names are. It’s also worth mentioning that according to the plot of The Naked Gun 33 1/3: The Final Insult, Frank Jr. was born in 1994, so he should be approximately 30 years old in the upcoming movie.

Liam Neeson, who is now in his 70s, bears no resemblance to Nielsen and maintains an unmistakable Irish accent, as seen in his acting style. Some viewers were initially skeptical about Neeson’s role given his lack of comedic background, but it’s worth noting that Leslie Nielsen too started off as a serious actor before becoming comedy royalty with films like “Airplane!” and “The Naked Gun.

The sneak peek promises more of the classic slapstick-action humor, as Neeson dons a disguise to appear small and infiltrate a bank heist. Yes, at 6′ 4″, Neeson is quite petite in this costume. He openly acknowledges the audience, revealing his role in the updated Police Squad. Furthermore, there’s a visual joke involving the contentious former star, OJ Simpson.

In the revamped version of the series, as characters like Neeson’s mourn their deceased parents (from the initial trilogy), we are introduced to Simpson’s character, Nordberg’s son. Instead of displaying sorrow, he merely gives a subtle nod to the camera. This scene was instrumental in winning over many viewers for the reboot, but it did not convince one of the original Zuckers, who remains unimpressed by this fresh interpretation.

Although the original cast and crew aren’t coming back for a revival of The Naked Gun, there are some heavyweight names attached to the project. Akiva Schaffer, known for his work with Andy Samberg’s comedy troupe The Lonely Island on SNL, will be directing and co-writing. Seth MacFarlane, creator of Family Guy, is serving as a producer. The cast includes Liam Neeson alongside Paul Walter Houser, Pamela Anderson, Liza Koshy, Danny Huston, Kevin Durand, Cody Rhodes, Busta Rhymes, and CCH Pounder. Given the star-studded team and the brief teaser that’s been released, it seems they aim to maintain the essence of the original film. The Naked Gun is set to hit theaters on August 1, 2025.
