Liev Schreiber Explains Why He Was ‘Ok’ With Not Reprising Sabretooth In Deadpool And Wolverine, And I Understand Where He’s Coming From

As a gamer who has spent countless hours immersed in the X-Men universe, I must admit that the return of Sabretooth in Deadpool & Wolverine was a thrilling moment, albeit not quite as exhilarating as when Hugh Jackman first donned the adamantium claws. The dynamic between Tyler Mane’s and Liev Schreiber‘s portrayals adds an intriguing layer to Victor Creed’s character evolution, much like how different playthroughs of a game can offer unique perspectives on the same storyline.

Previously absent from the big screen for quite some time, the iconic Sabretooth character made a comeback this year in “Deadpool & Wolverine”… though perhaps not the version you’re accustomed to. Tyler Mane took up the role again in one of the most anticipated cameos for “Deadpool 3,” following his portrayal of Victor Creed in the initial “X-Men” film. Yet, let us not forget that Liev Schreiber also played Sabretooth in “X-Men Origins: Wolverine.” Interestingly, Schreiber was content with not featuring in the upcoming Marvel movie, and I can empathize with his decision.

Since it’s been 15 years since the release of “X-Men Origins: Wolverine”, Schreiber noted that it would be more challenging for him to get into Sabretooth form for “Deadpool & Wolverine”. He wasn’t prepared to put in the same level of effort that Hugh Jackman did to reprise his role as Wolverine. In his own words:

Frankly, it takes quite an effort to shape your body to such a state. Seeing Hugh [Jackman] prepare himself once more made me feel content just watching from the sidelines.

During an interview with Collider about his upcoming movie “Across the River and Into the Trees,” Liev Schreiber discussed his absence from “Deadpool & Wolverine.” At 57 years old, it’s clear that getting into shape for a role would be more challenging compared to when he was filming “X-Men Origins: Wolverine” at age 40. Additionally, Tyler Mane’s Sabretooth met an early demise in The Void, being swiftly decapitated by Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine. While it takes a lot of effort to maintain physical fitness for a major role, it’s even more challenging when you only have limited screen time.

As a gamer, I’ve never had an issue stepping aside from the thrilling ride that is Deadpool and Wolverine. However, the countless fan calls over the years, even for roles like Sabretooth in 2017’s Logan (originally meant to be my role), have always warmed my heart. I just want to say thank you for the love and support you’ve shown me throughout these years.

There’s nothing quite like the awe I feel when folks reflect on an action of mine, and their gratitude is so heartfelt that they long for me to repeat that deed.

Liev Schreiber portrayed Sabretooth only once in X-Men Origins: Wolverine, but he has also lent his voice to Wilson Fisk, or Kingpin, in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. Interestingly, Deadpool & Wolverine featured several recurring actors from previous Marvel movies, including Hugh Jackman as Wolverine and Ryan Reynolds reprising Wade Wilson. Additionally, Wesley Snipes, Jennifer Garner, Dafne Keen, Chris Evans, and Channing Tatum all made appearances, with Tatum finally getting the chance to play Gambit following numerous attempts to produce a Gambit movie that were halted when Disney decided not to proceed with the project in 2019.

The action-packed duo of Deadpool & Wolverine is currently playing in cinemas, but expect it to eventually become available for streaming on Disney+, where you can already catch X-Men Origins: Wolverine. On the other hand, Across the River and Into the Trees has started its theater release, while you can now watch him alongside Nicole Kidman in the miniseries The Perfect Couple, which is accessible via a Netflix subscription.
