As a devoted admirer of the rich history that Yanaka, Tokyo holds, I’ve been captivated by the architectural masterpiece crafted by HAGISO Inc. This charming three-storied dwelling, nestled amidst the area’s iconic shrines and temples, boasts an extraordinary internal design.
Despite the modern exterior with its yellow design harmonizing well with densely populated streets, the interior layout deviates by approximately 10 degrees, resulting in a triangular layout for the striking stairwell and skylight. A closer inspection of the facade reveals that the entrance door and balcony are slightly angled inwards, mirroring the building’s distinctive wall arrangement. However, the interior exudes warmth and familiarity with its light wooden flooring, varnished wooden archways contrasting against white walls and beamed ceilings, imparting a traditional ambiance to the house.

On the ground level, the kitchen stands out with its striking indigo cabinets and vibrant yellow subway tiles, creating a bold pop of color against the neutral backdrop and aligning with the exterior’s color scheme. Along the walls, built-in wooden shelving, columns, and wall panels lend a rustic touch, grounding the space in natural materials.
Hagiso Inc’s blending of mid-century and handmade furniture on the ground floor imparts a warm, lived-in feel while still preserving the tranquil essence of the house. Within this same room, a pendant shade resembling a flower and vintage wall lamps contribute playful accents to the contemporary living area, offering soft lighting for evening hours.
The staircase ascending to the upper levels showcases a blend of designs, commencing with rough wooden treads and subsequently transitioning into sleek, curved metal steps that seem suspended. These suspended steps also facilitate the passage of more daylight, adding to the brightness of the areas they link.
In the unused spaces around the house, consider using the natural wood you’ve got for shelving, cabinets, doorframes, and window frames. Scattered areas will still have tile floors with a hint of brick, maintaining the indoor-outdoor connection that is a consistent aspect of the design.
