Hold on to your coconuts because one of Stitch’s parents is coming home.
As a devoted fan, I’m thrilled to share that Chris Sanders, the brilliant mind behind the 2002 animated gem “Lilo & Stitch” and the filmmaker of “Wild Robot,” is reportedly in the final stages of negotiation to rejoin the Disney family and script the sequel to their live-action blockbuster hit.
The agreement stipulates that Sanders, who has voiced the character in both iterations of the series, will solely work on scriptwriting and not direct at this point. Moreover, Sanders is also dedicated to creating the follow-up to Robot for DreamWorks Animation’s production.
Last week, the live-action Stitch film became the initial 2025 Hollywood production to surpass one billion dollars globally at the box office, as reported by The Hollywood Reporter. The movie has outperformed expectations since its Memorial Day release, largely due to the support of families and young adults from Generation Z who were fans of the original title.
For more than two months now, the movie “Stitch” has been showing in cinemas domestically, and on its opening day, May 23rd, it shattered records by earning an impressive $183 million over a four-day holiday period. This contributed significantly to setting a new record for the biggest Memorial Day weekend ever (shared with “Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning,” starring Tom Cruise, from Paramount Pictures.)
As a gamer, I’ve got to admit, it’s been quite a year for blockbusters! Only two movies have managed to rake in over $400 million domestically, and guess who’s trailing behind the Minecraft Movie? None other than Stitch!
Chris Kekaniokalani Bright and Chris Van Waes penned the screenplay for the live-action film that Dean Fleischer Camp oversaw as director.
Jonathan Eirichwill return to produce.
It remains undecided how the producers and studio plan to develop the narrative, focusing on a solitary girl who makes friends with a blue dog that unexpectedly is an escaped alien designed for devastating destruction. The initial film spawned two straight-to-video sequels, namely “Stitch! The Movie” and “Stitch Has a Glitch,” along with “Lilo & Stitch: The Series.” The upcoming sequel will introduce a fresh tale.
Chris Sanders, in collaboration with Dean DeBlois, created and jointly directed the initial animated film. This marked their first directorial ventures together. Subsequently, they teamed up again on the first “How to Train Your Dragon”. Later, Sanders partnered with Kirk DeMicco to write and direct “The Croods”. In 2020, he made his live-action directorial debut with the adaptation of “The Call of the Wild”, featuring Harrison Ford.
