As a gamer with a soft spot for movies and a deep appreciation for complex characters, I find Lily-Rose Depp’s journey fascinating. Growing up with such a unique perspective on the entertainment industry, it’s not surprising that she was deeply affected by her father’s iconic role in Edward Scissorhands. It’s ironic, really, that the sweet and gentle character left such a lasting fear in her young heart.
Fast forward to her latest role as Ellen Hutter in Nosferatu, and it seems she’s found a kindred spirit in the film’s antagonist. The complexity of these characters, their dual nature of being both terrifying and pitiable, is what draws us to them. It’s like playing a dark RPG game where the villain has a hidden backstory that makes you question their motives.
And as for the empathy she feels for Nosferatu, well, I think we can all relate to having a soft spot for the misunderstood anti-hero. After all, who among us hasn’t rooted for the villain in a game or movie at least once? Just remember, next time you’re playing a game and your character is about to make a fateful decision, think of Nosferatu – he might just be a misunderstood guy trying to find love. Or something like that. Game on!
Lily-Rose Depp is discussing the emotional impact she experienced while her father, the actor and musician Johnny Depp, portrayed the character of Edward Scissorhands in the 1990 movie bearing the same title.
With a spectral appearance, unkempt hair, and hands made of scissors, Edward can easily scare off many children. However, Johnny Depp’s younger self had a different source of fear, as revealed in an interview with Harper’s Bazaar U.K., published on Thursday. According to the actress who played Nosferatu, it was the way people treated Edward in the movie that left the deepest impression on her.
She found it distressing, not because she felt he was frightening, but because everyone around him was being so unkind. It made her very sad,” Depp explained, mentioning that her parents, Johnny Depp and French actress-singer Vanessa Paradis, permitted her to watch the Tim Burton movie when she was just 3 years old.
In the movie, Johnny Depp’s character Edward is a robot-like being who resides with a family in a suburban neighborhood. Despite his peaceful and caring nature, Edward’s appearance scares his neighbors to the point where they drive him away from town. Lily-Rose Depp shared that the ending of the film left her feeling so terrified that she stopped watching Edward Scissorhands ever since.
The actress admitted she found it peculiar since she doesn’t recall many events from her early years, but that particular incident left her terrified. She described it as a challenging memory from her childhood.
In her recent movie, the actress likened Edward to the famous vampire character Nosferatu, portrayed by Bill Skarsgard. This role is from the reimagined version of “Nosferatu,” directed by Robert Eggers, which is a modern take on the 1922 silent film with the same title. In this dark fantasy production, the actress plays Ellen Hutter, who finds herself the object of Nosferatu’s infatuation.
She expressed that while Edward is the heroic figure and Nosferatu appears to be the antagonist, she finds herself feeling a touch of compassion towards Nosferatu. She wonders if it’s unusual or wrong to feel this way.
Depp mentioned that as an actress, she finds herself attracted to intricate, multi-layered roles such as those portrayed by Edward Scissorhands and Nosferatu.
As a passionate enthusiast, I find myself drawn to the deeper, more complex aspects of life and art. In my acting career, I yearn for roles that offer a rich tapestry to delve into, providing me with the depth and layers necessary for a truly immersive experience.
Nosferatu is available to watch in theaters.
