It appears that the long-awaited Friday the 13th prequel series titled Crystal Lake, being developed by A24, seems to be moving forward once again following the exit of showrunner Bryan Fuller last year which resulted in a complete rework. The reigns have now been taken up by Brad Caleb Kane, fresh from completing production on the IT prequel series Welcome to Derry. Furthermore, casting updates are emerging with Linda Cardellini in negotiations for the role of Pamela Voorhees.
According to industry insider Jeff Sneider (via Bloody Disgusting), a rumor circulating currently is that Cardellini might be the first confirmed cast member for Crystal Lake. Although this hasn’t been officially verified yet, it’s essential to wait for further confirmation from other sources. If true, this would mean that Cardellini would play a role in the show, which was initially announced in 2022 as an “expanded prequel” to the well-known slasher series and will center around not only Pamela but also her son Jason.
Initially gaining recognition through the TV show “Freaks and Geeks” in 1999, she subsequently became a significant cast member in the latter part of the long-running medical drama “ER,” which ended in 2009. Her film roles include popular movies like the live action “Scooby-Doo” films where she portrayed Velma, “Green Book,” and the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Laura Barton, also known as Agent 19. Currently, she voices Elizabeth Bates in “Creature Commandos,” stars in the dark comedy series “No Good Deed,” and was nominated for several awards in 2020 and 2021 for her performance in the Netflix series “Dead to Me,” including a Primetime Emmy and a couple of Screen Actors Guild accolades.
‘Crystal Lake’ Will Be “Worth the Wait”
Despite some Crystal Lake enthusiasts feeling let down after Fuller left the show last year, Kane is no stranger to creating quality television. Not only is he an executive producer and co-showrunner for the series Welcome to Derry, but he has also produced and written successful shows like Fringe and Black Sails. Given his past as a fan of the Friday the 13th franchise, it appears that Kane has a solid grasp on the genre, having stated at the time he took over the series: “Growing up in the slasher flick era, nothing defined my childhood more than Friday The 13th.
Although significant changes have been scarce for the moment, Kane recently provided some insights on his Instagram in December (as shown above). He mentioned that “Crystal Lake” will be worth the patience when it’s finally completed. In a post for Friday the 13th (for those who observe it), he expressed his regret about not being able to provide a more comprehensive update, but remained tight-lipped.
To put it plainly, the story has been shattered, new scripts are being developed and our aim is to provide fans (including me) with a thrilling, chilling, gruesome, and fulfilling journey that’s worth the anticipation. More updates will be shared in the coming year. However, if you suspect we’re all destined for doom, then perhaps there’s something you know I don’t.
As I eagerly anticipate the rumored casting of Cardellini as Pamela Voorhees, I wholeheartedly recommend diving into the chilling saga of ‘Friday the 13th’ Parts 1-8, now streaming on PlutoTV. For those who crave more, the rest of the series, including the 2009 reboot, can be rented or purchased from various Video On Demand (VOD) platforms.
