Lisa Kudrow Shares Huge Romy & Michele's High School Reunion Sequel Update

As a huge fan of Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion, I can’t help but feel excited by the recent news that a sequel is in development. I first watched this cult classic comedy back in the late 90s, and it instantly became one of my favorite films. The story of two underdog women, Romy and Michele, who create fake careers to impress their former classmates at their high school reunion resonated with me on a deep level.

The beloved comedy “Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion,” released in 1997, has long been requested for a sequel by fans. Though it didn’t bring in big box office numbers initially, its popularity grew significantly upon release on home video. A sequel had been whispered about for years, but the prospect became more promising in 2022 when development was reportedly underway. Since then, information has been limited regarding its progress, but one of the film’s stars, Lisa Kudrow, has confirmed that she’s read the script, leaving us eagerly waiting for production to begin.

During an interview with ComicBook.com, Kudrow discussed her new Apple TV+ series “Time Bandits.” The topic of a possible “Romy and Michele” sequel came up. Kudrow revealed she’s read the script but isn’t certain if any decisions have been made regarding the follow-up yet. She stated: “I’ve enjoyed what I’ve seen in the script, but it’s unclear if anything has been decided about a sequel at this point.”

I’ve gone through the script, but it’s not final yet. Let’s wait and see. I’m hoping for a yes, as I found the script quite appealing.

David Mirkin directed the movie “Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion,” which was initially a stage play named “Ladies Room.” In this play, Lisa Kudrow, who stars in the film, also appeared. The story focuses on Romy (Mira Sorvino) and Michele (Kudrow), both in their late twenties, who have struggled to make a mark in the real world. They were frequently tormented by a clique of popular girls known as “The A-Group” during high school, an experience that left a lasting impact. As they approach their ten-year reunion and feel dissatisfied with their current careers, Romy and Michele devise false professions to avoid being bullied again and to impress their former peers. The cast includes Janeane Garofalo, Alan Cumming, Julia Campbell, and Vincent Ventresca.

The comedy film “Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion” (2001) received generally favorable critic reviews, earning a 75% fresh score on Rotten Tomatoes. However, it didn’t generate significant box office success, pulling in $29.2 million against a production budget of $20 million. Despite this, the movie gained a devoted following through home video sales and frequent cable showings post-release. A prequel titled “Romy and Michele: In the Beginning” aired on ABC Family in 2005, with Katherine Heigl portraying Romy and Alexandra Breckenridge as Michele – both roles were originally played by Mira Sorvino and Lisa Kudrow, respectively. This prequel was also penned by the film’s original writer, Robin Schiff.

As a passionate fan, I’ve been eagerly waiting for any news regarding a possible sequel to my favorite movie. The buzz about a potential reunion has been circulating for months, and finally, things seem to be falling into place. In February, Sorvino announced that Schiff was returning to write the script, and both she and Kudrow were on board. With everyone’s involvement, it looks like we may get to witness another exciting adventure from these beloved characters soon. I can hardly contain my excitement!

You can currently watch “Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion” on Hulu, Disney+, and Paramount+ streaming platforms.
