In numerous aspects, “Captain America: Brave New World” is considered the long-awaited follow-up to “The Incredible Hulk” that many Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) fans believed would never materialize. This latest installment sees Harrison Ford assuming the role of Red Hulk, replacing the late William Hurt, and delves into the storyline of The Leader, portrayed by Tim Blake Nelson – a character last seen in the original film from 16 years ago. Moreover, “Brave New World” further expands on Hulk’s lore, as it also reintroduces a character who has been absent during that time frame within the Captain America series.
In the official Marvel Podcast, director Julius Onah hinted at Liv Tyler reprising her role as Betty Ross in “Captain America: Brave New World.” Fans have not seen Betty since her debut in “The Incredible Hulk,” where she was Bruce Banner’s love interest, a role played by Edward Norton. Despite Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross regularly appearing, Betty has been noticeably absent. Although Onah did not reveal specifics about her part in “Brave New World,” he hinted that the father-daughter bond between Captain America and Betty would be significant in the film.
It was almost inevitable that Liv would return, given her genuine, relatable qualities. Her character plays a significant role in Thaddeus Ross’s storyline in this movie, helping him solidify his legacy and reshape his identity both as a person and a leader.
At this point, it’s uncertain how substantial Tyler’s part in “Brave New World” will be or how many instances we’ll see her. Given the film’s dense narrative, it could be expected that her screen time will probably be limited to a few minutes, perhaps even less. Initial reports of Betty Ross appearing in “Brave New World” surfaced when Tyler was spotted on the movie set several years ago. The pictures suggest that Betty may not be in high spirits when “Captain America” sequel premieres next week.
How ‘Brave New World’ Is Connected to ‘The Incredible Hulk’
The links between “Captain America: Brave New World” and the 2008 movie “The Incredible Hulk” are becoming more intricate. Instead of William Hurt, Harrison Ford is now portraying Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross, a character who transitioned from a former general to the President of the United States in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). In this new storyline, known as “Brave New World”, the Red Hulk character is closely adhering to the comic book tale where the Hulk’s adversary gains similar powers, while maintaining most of his original personality. This might bring back memories for fans of “The Incredible Hulk” about Ross’ questionable moral standings from the initial film.
One of the most intriguing storylines following The Incredible Hulk is that of The Leader, portrayed by Tim Blake Nelson. The Ballad of Buster Scruggs actor made his Marvel Cinematic Universe introduction as Samuel Sterns in the 2008 film, where he was infected with Bruce Banner’s blood from a head wound. As his head grew larger and his intelligence heightened, The Leader is expected to pose a significant challenge for Captain America, and perhaps for the Hulk, should he return for another solo movie.
