As a long-time fan of hip-hop, I have to admit that LL Cool J‘s recent statement on Apple Music’s Le Code left me feeling a mix of admiration and amusement. On one hand, it’s undeniable that he was a trailblazer in the industry, setting trends that others followed and breaking new ground with his music. His contributions to the genre are undisputed, from his jewelry and champagne-filled videos to his heartfelt love songs and bad boy vibe.
LL Cool J recently appeared on Apple Music’s Le Code and spoke about his place in the industry.
Speaking on his career over the decades, the rap legend responded to questions about a possible movie. While he did state that it would be difficult to accomplish, he said, I think that one day people are going to wake up and realize LL Cool J is the most important rapper that ever existed. I truly believe one day people will say that.” He goes on to break down that he was the first one to ever set any of the trends other rappers were doing. He explained, “They’re going to look and say, ‘Wow when it comes to the jewelry, this is the guy that introduced all the ice and the jewelry and the champagne.” He adds, “They’re going to say when it comes to the love songs, they’re going to say, ‘This is the guy that introduced the love songs and all the love shit.'” He continued to express his ideals on being the GOAT stating, “When it comes to the bad boy vibe, they’re going to realize that this is the guy who introduced all the bad boy vibes before it was done. When it comes to the G.O.A.T terminology, ‘This is the guy who came up with all the G.O.A.T stuff.’ They’re going to say when it comes to Def Jam …’Wow this is the first artist that was on Def Jam.’”
In the continuation of the interview, LL Cool J revealed that he was among the pioneering rappers who established and shaped many contemporary trends that are widely recognized today. Consequently, this puts him in the league of the Greatest of All Time (GOAT). You can watch the entire conversation by clicking on the video above.
