Locarno Film Festival Adds Carlos Reygadas, Joslyn Barnes to Rithy Panh-Led Main Jury

The lineup for the jury of the 78th Locarno Film Festival has been announced, featuring notable figures such as Carlos Reygadas (known for “Heli” and “The Untamed”), co-writer and producer of “Nickel Boys” Joslyn Barnes, Cambodian filmmaker Rithy Panh (the jury head), Swiss actress Ursina Lardi (“The White Ribbon”, “Veni Vidi Vici”), Dutch actress Renée Soutendijk (“Sweet Dreams”), Indonesian actress Asmara Abigail (“Stone Turtle”, “Impetigore”), La Frances Hui (MoMA film curator and New Directors/New Films co-chair), Indian actress Kani Kusruti (“All We Imagine as Light”), Jihan El Tahri (Franco-Egyptian producer, director, and visual artist), Lemohang Mosese (Lesotho-born filmmaker and visual artist), Italian actress Sara Serraiocco (“Sulla terra leggeri”, “Lord of the Ants”), James Hawkinson (Emmy award-winning cinematographer for TV shows like “The Man in the High Castle” and “Hannibal”), Judith Lou Lévy (producer who has worked with directors such as Mati Diop and Nadav Lapid), and French director Patricia Mazuy (“Saturn Bowling”). Each of these individuals will be responsible for selecting winners within their respective categories, including the Concorso Internazionale, Concorso Cineasti del Presente (dedicated to emerging directors), Pardi di Domani (Leopards of Tomorrow) short films section, and Swatch First Feature Award.

The Pardo Verde jury, which acknowledges films that contribute substantially to environmental consciousness and action, comprises U.S. independent director, writer, and producer Michael Almereyda, Italian director Martina Parenti known for her collaborative documentaries with Massimo D’Anolfi, and Seta Thakur, who leads communications and social innovation at the Wyss Academy for Nature.

In a statement, Giona A. Nazzaro, artistic director of the Locarno Film Festival, expressed gratitude to all artists who accepted their invitation to join juries at the festival. He stated that these artists would help introduce an exceptional and innovative collection of films to the world. The aim was to assemble juries that would enjoy the joy of discovering filmmakers, both established and emerging; jurors whose perspectives were open and generous. They sought visionary artists who they knew could still be touched by new discoveries and surprises.

The 2025 Locarno festival takes place Aug. 6-16.
