Locarno’s Wolfgang Tillmans Poster Offers “Image of a World in Which We Can All Live, Work Together”

This summer, the 78th edition of the Locarno Film Festival in Switzerland has revealed its poster, designed by the Turner Prize-winning German artist Wolfgang Tillmans. Last year’s poster was created by Annie Leibovitz.

According to Tillmans’ instructions, the design for the poster should prominently feature a leopard and the color yellow. He described his creation process, saying, “I combined an old photograph of a leopard I took in Kenya seven years ago, which was resting on a tree, with a pair of handmade fake leopard mittens that I made myself when I was 16 years old.

Maja Hoffmann, head of the Locarno Film Festival, described this year’s poster as an “homage to creativity” that encapsulates the daring, emotional, and vibrant essence of cinema. She further explained: “[Tillmans’] work mirrors the depths of perception, pushing boundaries and questioning traditional norms, just like cinema itself. … The Locarno Film Festival is a platform for the potency of storytelling, innovation, and diversity, constantly delving into the allure of visual narratives on various dimensions.
