Logan Co-Writer Responds to Deadpool & Wolverine's Opening Scene: "I Did Not Expect That"

As a seasoned movie critic who has seen more superhero films than I care to count, I must say that the opening sequence of Deadpool & Wolverine was nothing short of a masterstroke. The way they handled the events of Logan was both unexpected and respectful, managing to pay homage without treading on hallowed ground.

Among all the unexpected twists, Deadpool and Wolverine presented for viewers, the opening scene stood out as one of those iconic Deadpool moments that swiftly addressed the query about how the film would tackle the events from 2017’s Logan. Essentially, by unearthing the past…literally speaking. Interestingly, even Michael Green, a co-writer of Logan, was taken aback by the extent to which the sequence delved into such extremes, as he recently expressed his views on the alteration of his ending for Logan.

Despite Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine having a noble farewell in what was believed to be his last appearance as the X-Men character, the movie Deadpool & Wolverine quickly tackled the question on everyone’s mind about how they would handle such a legendary ending in comic book movie lore. Ryan Reynolds’ Deadpool, in a fourth wall break, made it clear that they wouldn’t be sensitive about it. The subsequent scenes show Deadpool unearthing Wolverine’s Adamantium skeleton and dismantling it piece by piece to use as a weapon against TVA agents trying to apprehend him.

The unexpected start of the Deadpool & Wolverine movie didn’t come as a shock to many Marvel enthusiasts, although some might find it controversial. In an interview with IGN, Michael Green, who co-wrote Logan, admitted he was forewarned about the film before its release. However, he views this similarity as a testament to the quality of his work on Hugh Jackman’s earlier Wolverine movie. He explained:

I hadn’t anticipated them pushing the boundaries as much as they did. It wasn’t clear that the scene where they dug him up and revealed him was supposed to be taken literally.

The team behind Logan seemed less like they were trying to alter its finale, but rather wrestling with the challenge of creating a film that matched their high regard for the original. Essentially, it was all praise. That movie is an absolute joy to watch. To put it simply, when we saw it in a packed theater, people went wild over every scene. It’s fantastic. It’s a remarkable franchise, and I can’t help but wish for more!

As a movie enthusiast, I must admit that the recent Marvel Cinematic Universe film has left me thoroughly impressed, not offended by the antics of Deadpool and Wolverine. Quite to the contrary, it appears that this blockbuster has outdone itself. And let me tell you, hearing N*Sync’s “Bye Bye Bye” will never be the same after witnessing this cinematic marvel.

Deadpool and Wolverine’s film has already become the top-grossing R-rated movie ever, outperforming Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker which made $1.079 billion after its 2019 release. Despite being a relatively new release, it seems improbable that it will overtake Inside Out 2 to be the year’s highest-grossing film. However, given that it’s the first MCU movie to surpass the $1 billion mark since Spider-Man: No Way Home in 2021, fans are certainly pleased.

In its third appearance, Deadpool (often referred to as “The Merc with a Mouth”) was anticipated to bring a significant boost to the struggling Marvel franchise, which has been having trouble getting people to go to the movies, with many fans preferring to stream upcoming titles like The Marvels on Disney+. However, the extraordinary success of Deadpool and Wolverine far surpassed expectations. Not only did the film break numerous records, but it also matched 2012’s The Avengers as the fourth fastest MCU movie to reach $1 billion.
