The 2024 London Film Festival (LFF) by the BFI will feature documentaries focusing on “witches” and Argentinian zoos and wildlife sanctuaries, along with debut films from a diverse range of filmmakers, according to organizers who announced the complete program for this year’s festival on Wednesday.
Overall, LFF will screen 253 titles, including features films, shorts, series, and immersive works, that hail from 79 countries and feature 64 languages. Of the total, 112 works are made by female and non-binary filmmakers, or 44 percent of the program, the fest said.
The London doc lineup includes the likes of Elizabeth Sankey’s 90-minute goth-y Witches, which posits a connection between historical witchery and post-partum psychological suffering and debuted at the Tribeca Film Festival.
In the meantime, the opening film for the LFF is Hanami by Denise Fernandes, a movie that had its world premiere at the Locarno Film Festival, and Happyend by Neo Sora, a film that made its debut at Venice in 2024.
The LFF Series will again highlight engaging series and episodic content across various genres, featuring fresh projects from renowned filmmakers and television creators such as Steven Knight, Jon Brown, Thomas Vinterberg, Sam Mendes, Alfonso Cuarón, Janicza Bravo, Nick Murphy, and Tinge Krishnan, according to the festival announcement.
Last week, the LFF unveiled its 11 competition program titles, such as a new movie starring Barry Keoghan, Nick Cave, and the voices of Sarah Snook and Eric Bana. Also included is The Extraordinary Miss Flower, a film from Iain Forsyth and Jane Pollard, famously known for their Cave movie 20,000 Days on Earth, and the Luca Guadagnino-produced April from Georgia’s Dea Kulumbegashvili, whose feminist debut feature Beginning drew positive reviews.
Previously, the LFF’s program outside the competition sections was structured to foster exploration and introduce the festival to new attendees. Here are the components: Love, Debate, Laugh, Dare, Thrill, Cult, Journey, Create, Experimenta, Family, Shorts, and Treasures. Attendees can also discover new and intriguing Series programming in various of the components. Premieres consist of 40 world premieres (of which 16 are features, two are series, 19 are shorts, and three are immersive projects), 12 international premieres (six are features, four are shorts, two are immersive) and 21 European premieres (17 are features, one is a series, three are shorts).
